Yeah, hornet. My old house backed onto a common, and it was quite usual to see one flying around - usually banging on the windows.
I back on to woods and playing fields so would make sense. Most years I normally get wasps nesting in my eaves but they are tiny compared to the beast I had in my bathroom earlier.

I suppose a bit like Watford, these European Hornets change their queen every few months regardless of how well she is doing her job.

Saw a massive hornet at Vicerage Road once. It was so big it was banging a drum and waving at a bunch of mongs behind the home goal

We stayed in a Suffolk holiday cottage about 12 years back, in the sticks. One evening when my family were upstairs (bath time) I popped outside to get something from the car, on returning I couldn’t … a swarm of hornets had been drawn to the exterior bulkhead light I’d switched on. Scary. My family couldn’t hear my calls to open the back door, so I had to climb through a narrow top light window 7’ up. One hornet followed me into the lounge, going against my wildlife loving nature I had to despatch the bugger. Size of a 50p piece .

Go molested by a bunch of them when sitting eating seafood in Sicily. They are scary and also intelligent compared to the wasp.
There are plenty more coming so better start changing to electric cars or they will all migrate here.

Was just sat in my office at home and heard a very loud but low buzzing noise coming from the hallway. Thought WTF is that so went to investigate. It was coming from the bathroom so went in there only to be presented with what only can be described as a giant wasp. It was probably an inch a half long and was as round as a dart barrel.

Just had a google and I'm guessing it was a European Hornet. Says they are quite common in Southern England but I've never seen anything as big as that bugger before. Are they common? And do they get to be as big as that?

Sadly it flew out the window before I had chance to get a picture of it. If it comes back I'll be prepared as I'll hear it coming a mile off.
They are evil looking fuckers. But they don’t seem to be as aggressive as wasps. They certainly don’t buzz around your face repeatedly like wasps do. If they did, I think I’d be too scared to leave my house.

A friend of mine got stung by one in France a few years back when we were on a fishing trip. He went to pick something up off the floor and shouted ‘What the f*** was that!?” then said to me “Touch that plant, I swear to God it just stung me, it’s like a stinging nettle but so much worse”. I didn’t believe him so he said ‘look, watch’ and touched the plant again. An even louder “f***ing HELL WHAT IS THAT THING?” and I bent down to look at the plant to find a hornet sat on the back of the stem under a leaf. Idiot. It still makes me laugh now, thinking about it.
