When the Millwall fans advanced some of their detractors stood their ground, others retreated. People behind them also retreated, naturally being afraid (as others have agreed).

It's all academic anyway. Thankfully it fizzled out.

Don`t blame them as what kind of idiot goes to a game of football for a fight, but the retreat was obvious from the North stand and perfectly sensible imho.

I think the point is that it was all bravado. IF..... any of those fans had wanted to get past the canvas then they would have done. And that was proved by the way the first sheeting was tossed to one side. I'm not disputing that it must have been scary for families but all Millwall fans did was invade a neutral area next to a very sparse section of the Amex that night.

They did then some brighton didnt budge maybe it gave them 2nd thoughts?

The special train for The Millwall lot left empty because the police had walked them to the southern platform whilst the train was at the northern platform.Mind you it must have been a lovely ride home for all the cops on the special with nothing to do.

From the front row of the WSU it was clear that there was a large movement away when Millwall fans finally 'broke' through the first cloth barrier, a few stood their ground but not that many.

It was laughable though watching them trying to get past that first cloth divide, almost a case of "Oh no, i've been prevented from attacking you because of this really flimsy and easily lifted / removed but almost impenitrable cloth barrier, it's just far too difficult to get past it" (a bit like a person saying don't hold me back when looking to fight someone in the hope that someone will then do it to prevent a fight they don't really want but want to make it appear that they do)

I was surprised that after evading the line of stewards, the fired up Wall fans advance was scuppered by a the last ditch defence of the blue fabric.

From where I was sitting in WSU it looked all over, but that blue line of fabric must have furrowed its brow, or squited its eyes with a menacing look, they did stop rather soon when faced with it.

The police where useless they let a couple of hundred Millwall out to walk around the east stand headed by a line of police the full width of the walk way so Albion fans were forced up onto the grass bank NO POLICE were left to escort the sides of this group it was complete mayhem I said to the policeman filming on the steps up to the coaches that I hoped the film would be used by the police in training on how not to police this type of situation he agreed it was badly controlled

That's what I was caught up in. Thankfully not that many Millwall supporters had gathered at that point. One entry above suggests that the special train wasn't well populated. A lot to learn for the local constabulary tonight.

If they wanted to fight (and it was clear that brighton stood their ground despite being outnumbered) then wait until innocent people can't get hurt, imagine how scared a little kid would be seeing that. I honestly hope that one day those millwall fans who think its ok to charge a stand full of scarfers, women and children get absolutely battered. I must have been stood right behind you when you said that because I heard and agreed at the time. Totally useless by the police. The Millwall fans had no police either side or behind them so simply turned around and tried to fight any Albion fan in sight.

Welcome to the 1970s. It was always like this, not just Millwall. As it happens I caught the 22.25 train to Brighton and a few Millwall were on there too. It was an enjoyable 10 minutes or so talking with them. They are not all bad, some actually go to follow their team.

that just sums up the wanna be cockneys, funny how they can live off a reputation set by fans years ago, the best part is though that when they are on their own they wouldn't make a noise, and if they came up against fair numbers then they wouldn't be kicking off. I saw a group of them who live down here, some of them aren't even from Bermondsey and yet they all had flat caps on and cockney accents (and that pisses me off, they are not cockneys, You aren't a cockney if you're from Bermondsey either)

Typical millwall, bunch of hyped up c**** acting hard, on the bridge after the game they were all chanting and giving it large until a handful of brighton fans went up to them, had there not been so many coppers they would've got what they deserved. They're nothing but vile, sub-human scum

Millwall fans are protected on the way to the ground, and after. A special train is put on for them. A few were in the carriage on the way back, they started showing off, quite a few Brighton fans drowned them out....and then the police moved in and stood around them. Better protection than the pope.

Actually proud of our fans last night , stood up to those chavs all over the place and in many places got involved and came out on top .

South stand thing wasn't great as lots gave legs but wasn't ever going to escalate further ,

Dont know what happend behind me , and being a area with lots of kids in quite understandable if parents did usher their kids away , i would of done the same , but if those there had not stood their ground i would hazard a guess that the millwall fans would not have stopped at the 3ft bit of netting that separated the 2 sets of fans at the start of the handbags , but they didn't , why didn't they ? because their bluff was called by a 100 or so supporters not willing to be taken the piss out of , nothing big nothing clever and nothing violent , we just stood together , pity its not the same on the pitch .

Bang on! the meatheads stopped in their tracks once they realised they were going to have to back their threats with some action.They seem to thnk everyone will run away because they're " the Wall" W anchors, the lot have them....wouldn't have lasted 5 minutes in the 70's
Even my 13 year old daughter was laughing at them.
