[Football] Get England to penalties and they’re ****ed

Unless it's Saka's resting bitch face he looked absolutely lost and terrified when he came on as a sub and did absolutely nothing. Solely on that I would have adapted and changed the penalty takers. It was no surprise to me he missed, I was dreading his penalty. No disrespect to him as previous games he was brilliant in periods however it seemed quite obvious his head wasn't right at the time, not in hindsight.

Small margins of course as Rashford's was the crucial pen, missing by inches. No blame on them, Jorginho, Mbappe, Morata all missed this tournament,.

I'm always reluctant to make any assumptions about how a player's feeling from watching them on the television. People who look absolutely dead inside can be churning all over the place. There's also no knowing how a player will react to being bumped up the order at the last minute, although I'm sure they'd all say they want to take one afterwards.

Apart from the players who missed, I mainly feel sorry for Pickford. Only conceded 2 goals all tournament up to the final penalties, then saved 2 of them (the same as Donnarumma) and still didn't win.

yes fair do's, imagine the emotions for Pickford with the elation of that brilliant second save and then the devastating miss seconds later. Bad enough for us!

I agree - but by saying that he (Southgate) made the decisions as to who was taking the pens, he leaves himself open to massive criticism for choosing Saka and not Grealish - especially when Grealish said he wanted to take one....

Yes, BUT . . . Maybe Gsouth sees something we suspect but don't know about JG (and other players) in that theyre erratic/unstable. The skill kid everyones screaming for who would be the new Chris Waddle

^ Yep, keeper was a serious unit.

To steal a gag from elsewhere:
Shamima Beggum had more chance of coming home last night than the trophy did

I can’t find a suitable thread to post this on so I’ll just put it here as it’s related to the penalties:

I’m getting really sick of hearing the pundits say “Italy deserved to win because they were the better team.” Butcher, Cairney, Sutton and Richards were all at it last night. I know I have my red and white tinted spectacles on and am touchy after yesterday, but after 90 minutes the scores were level and after 120 minutes the scores were also level. We absolutely bossed the first half. We were so dominant I let out audible laughs every time we sliced through their non-existent midfield. I was so calm, it felt more like a friendly than a final. Second half Italy dominated, and extra-time was 50/50, with both teams eventually playing for pennos.

If the two halves had been reversed and we’d had the shocker in the first and the blinder in the second, everyone would have been saying how much of the better team we were. Football is a 90/120 minute game and it’s lazy of pundits to forget just how Southgate outclassed Mancini in that first half. We didn’t even capitulate after the equaliser went in.

For me, over 120 mins there was nothing between us, vindicated by the scoreline. They just took one better penalty than us.
