That was my initial thought last night that he might quit in the heat of the moment.

I think next day on reflection he’ll realise what an achievement this tournament has been. To get to the final for England is a great achievement. And semis in the last WC. This team and manager has raised the bar for this generation of England fans. I hope Southgate will stay for the WC at least. It’s only a year away.

I think he will have the FA blowing smoke up him right now and making sure he does not. Although he has done well, his negative naturally defensive mindset could not leave him when he needed to cross the line first.

Mancini knew getting through extra time was a huge advantage to them. Southgate should have done something here he chose to stick. It really had twist all over it. Perhaps Holland bottled forcing Southgate to go big when it mattered too, a decision I am sure that will play a zillion times in their heads.

It was like cooking the mother of all pizzas and forgetting the mozzarella, so adding it as it came out the oven...................WTF were they doing.

As soon as I watched Rashford walking up to take the pen , he looked nervous and that stutter approach takes a lot of the power out of your shot so I wasn’t surprised he missed .

More surprised the manager allowed a 19 yr old to take a pen we had to score , when he’s very inexperienced at international football and to my knowledge never taken a pen in senior professional football . Surely Grealish or Henderson should have taken it .

Same with Sancho , way to inexperienced, there were better options .

Easy to say after the event , I know .

Henderson had already been subbed for a better penalty taker…..

Brilliant managent get two players hardly warned up to take one and a teenager :clap2:

Yes it was. And was the right decision.

The penalty takers would have been decided on the basis of what was seen in training. These three clearly did well and wanted to take one.

On the night it didn't work out.

Too many hindsight managers out there at the moment.

Far from hindsight.

I hate subs being brought on JUST to take a penalty, and called it before they took them.

It puts massive additional pressure on them to score.

Also screams poor management that he didn't use Subs to change things and try and win the game playing football. Two or three pairs of fresh legs could have made all the difference early in extra time.

There is nothing hindsight about Gianluigi Donnarumma penalty record or the Italians when they have him.

Lack of bottle from Southgate.

If we were to know that penalty-taking lineup prematch as Southgate did, we would have been backing it did not make pens.

I see no hindsight on this one, just foresight lacking in abundance.

Agreed, but could have happened much earlier.

ie. BEFORE rather than after the Italy equaliser, when England looked exhausted after chasing the ball for an hour. The inevitability of that second half was like watching the Albion trying to hold a 1-0 lead under Chris Hughton.

We lost on pens. It was a bittersweet end.

But bloody hell I enjoyed the tournament. We beat Germany and the whole of England came together.

No negatives. I enjoyed watching England, and that’s all I ask for. Thanks for your efforts GSouth and the boys.

Now on the Albion. Sign some players for £££ Millions and millions please so I can hype up our league campaign like it’s Leicester 15/16

The difference between rashford being fresh, strong and perfectly-placed to take a penalty, and it being a terrible managerial decision to bring him on so late, was about two inches.
Who’s to say he wouldn’t have missed even if he’d been on longer? He still would have used that crappy run up.

Also, All this talk of negative tactics costing us is exaggerated.
Whatever we tried we would probably still have lost. We could have been picked apart.
The most important factor is this Italy team is ever so slightly better than England.

I think it's fair to say my chances of becoming a professional footballer are slim so I'm unlikely to ever take a penalty for England.

But having said that, I'm not convinced by these stuttering penalty run-ups and trying to play mind games with the keeper. The 3 Engaln pens that were saved / missed tonight just never looked convincing. Kane just stuck his laces straight through it and Maguire's completely ****ed the camera in the top corner of the net. That, to me, seems to be the way to take a penalty.

Maguire's penalty would have gone in if he'd hit it straight at their 'keeper such was the venom behind it. The bloke is a tosser but he sure can hit a football when it matters.

I thought it showed real football nous to bring on the excellent penalty takers to give ourselves an advantage in the shoot-out - it was going to be another Southgate masterstroke

Problem was, it turned out they weren't excellent penalty-takers.....

It was also weird to take Walker and Henderson off and leave us playing a couple of minutes with a striker at right-back, if Sterling and Grealish weren't even lined up to take a penalty... and our two most experienced players would have been good to have on the pitch to help the youngsters through the pens.

and, as I'm sure half the country is wondering, wasn't that fifth penalty just made for Henderson to bury it? Saka might have been banging them in in training, but to be that inconsolable after missing showed that he didn't have the mental strength for it, not at this young age anyway...

Thats the pain of it, that two youngsters were brought on to do nothing but take a penalty, and a 19-year old who was an outsider for the squad in the first place missed the decisive one. That's three kids who are going to live with it for a long time, not to mention all the disgusting online abuse they've received. If Walker, Henderson, Sterling take them and miss, well at least they have enough credit in the bank and experience of life and football to cope with it.

But as I felt at the time, it could have been a master-stroke......

Got to agree with hans kraay fan club, just seeing them unable to come on as the seconds ticked down filled me with dread. I can't imagine not kicking a ball for basically 2 1/2 hours, running on then your next actual kick of a ball is to score a pen in England's biggest game in 55 years.

The brutal fact is, Pickford made 2 brilliant saves, for any other country, they win you the game. However, we're England and we over think it.

Psychologically speaking, what Southgate did was basically tell Rashford and Sancho that you're not trusted to take part in this game, other than to take a pen. If Sterling wasn't going to take one, why on earth wasn't Sancho / Rashford bought on for him much earlier!? Honestly, he got that so wrong, not hindsight at all, he set us up for that. Feel for the players as they never should have been in that position.

You may as well ask why do players bother warming up with a ball an hour before kick off? Why all the ball work, possession games etc. if it doesn't matter? Surely being in the groove helps? We'll never know if Rashford coming on at even say HT of ET to replace Sterling means he scores, but I reckon being involved in the game, having a run, being trusted by the manager to take part would only help not hinder - he might still miss, but I reckon he'd have slightly more chance on his side that he wouldn't.

Perfectly put, Southgate got most things right throughout the tournament but got this horribly wrong. Gutting because that really felt like the best chance we’re going to have for a fair while…

Good point . .it was discussed the other day that Italy would tire after 60-70 minutes, you'd have thought Gsouth would have known that as well, and made maybe 3 or 4 changes to pick up the pace later in the game, we could have been home and dry inside 90.

This!

A change had been needed for at least 10 minutes before the equaliser.

With Italy tiring in Extra Time and evidently thinking re penalties, we should have gone for the jugular not sat back to defend. Kane and Sterling looked spent; at the very least I'd have brought Sancho and Rashford on for them to run at the defence, given them a chance to get into the game rather than hitting pens almost cold.
