benefit fraud

How?

illegal immigration

How?

protection of identity..proof of entitlment to public services such as education, healthcare or state benefits.

You already have what is a called a national insurance number it even comes with a card. If you want ID you can get a passport.

Ministers were told that in several recent arrests, police found people with papers giving them multiple identities, and the politicians stressed the importance of making sure the ID cards could not be forged.

The honous is on YOU to prove you are who you say you are. You can be locked up until you prove that.

Like it has already been said, there are already other countries oporating an ID card system and they have failed to prevent any of the things you suggest. Benefit fraud for example costs the goverment less than what it would cost to implement these cards.

Exactly. Why not just slightly modify the existing NI card as issued to all. Most people already carry it anyway. Stick a photo on it and there you go.

Are you suggesting that in countries with ID cards (for example US, Spain, France) have no illegal immigration, misuse of public service or state benefits? No-one has every in these countries escaped the long arm of the law due to false ID?

Oh, in that case its a great idea! I cant understnad why we havent done it before now

It won't be aswell as the aforementioned documents, ultimately you will have one document/card that will serve multi puposes, driving licence, service entitlements, NI card. general proof of ID. I suspect the gradual consolidation of the current myriad of items of beaurocracy will save money by being managed centrally.

NO it wont stop all fraud or illegal immigration or terrorist activities, but I suspect it will reduce it somewhat.

You are treating Biscuit unfairly with your perdantic rebuttals of his views, how about we ask you for cast iron proof that introducing ID cards will NOT produce the suggested benefits to our country........ I would imagine that would be as difficult as biscuit seems to have in presenting his cast iron views.

no seriously, you think they'll remove even one of the existing cards? That would mean a loss of power for the department that issues that card. It has already been stated in an early consoltation that the card may not replace the drivers licence card.

Cast iron proof? i think you need a fortune teller for that. Im just calling as i see it, and i see that *every* other ID card fails.

Im not against an ID card in principle, i carry around several forms of ID already. I object to a new card, that promises many things it cant deliver, that i'll have to pay for and be compelled to carry at all times lest i be fined and treated worse than those criminals that carry around forgeries.

I am sure that if you have an idea that you want to introduce, the onus should be on you to prove its benefits, not the other way round?
