I'd love to know the ins and outs of how you actually activate a release clause.

The legal department just writes to the other legal department and says we have activated the clause?

Anyone with actual knowledge on this?

Presumably, just send them a formal offer for the player, offering the value at which the release clause is set.

I believe in Spain (where a release clause is mandatory for every player) that the player buys themselves out of the contract. So the buying club transfers the funds to the player whilst presumably also altering the selling club to what they’re doing.

I’d assume it works the same way over here.

This would be like us selling Pedro, Mitoma and Dunk, three of our biggest players and not replace them. Its not the player having the release clause met, it's that they have sold their most important players ab bought nobody to replace them
Well firstly don’t put release clauses in their contracts.

Secondly the transfer window doesn’t close….sorry SLAM SHUT for another couple of weeks and they’ve just had another £40m in their bin.

Thirdly it’s Dirty Leeds so f*** em!

Although the money is effectively for the player to buy himself out of the contract I believe it is transferred directly between clubs (or in the case of Spanish football it’s paid to the players lawyers or agent and then to La Liga before being transferred to the selling club) without ever landing in the players account. This is to avoid the player being liable for paying tax on that money.

Did not sulk, are you sure? He cleared out his locker and refused to train. The way he handled his transfer was an absolute embarrassment.
I did not hear about clearing out the locker but he was told, I believe, that if he signs the contract he can leave if money is right. So fair enough if he did.
