Has he explained how he will fund this? Tory councils often blather on about how their council taxes are soooo low......but forget to tell you they have cut a variety of services.

Anyone can reduce tax if they dont spend anything.

Whilst I am not totally happy with Gordon Brown I, and I think the general public, are starting to feel that he is probably best placed to guide us through these difficult times.

Like ive said in anouther post, why is GB the best person to guide us through? Is it because he told you so?

Isn't that just Labour and Labour supporters all over though. People say the Tories have no policies but the only policies Labour have are slagging of the Tories. I cannot believe anyone thinks we will be better off with Labour and Brown except single mothers, students, long term unemployed, families with lots of kids , asylum seekers, civial servants, consultancy firms ----------------------------

Hear bloody hear, im glad some peaople can see this!

rubbish, you got caught out, and norway's oil production/reserves per capita ?
Got caught out? I genuinely don't know what you're talking about there. You seem to think that the reason that Sweden has been in a better state than we have for SIXTY years is because they weren't in world war 2. That is plainly bollocks.

Not me. Taking that list in turn:

Single mothers. Bringing a kid up on your own on a very limited income is not an easy option under any government. Go for the absent fathers, have some kind of system whereby the mother would not be penalized for working. I dare say that the vast majority of single mums would love to get outside the 24 hr a day life often in horrible conditions and interact with adults and have a feeling ofindependence. Too easy to pick on this group

Students. How is getting into huge debt whilst just starting to get your independence a beneficial thing?

Families with lots of kids. Is this per we or just the chavs? We need as many kids as possible in the uk to pay for our pensions and look after us in the future

Asylum seekers. They aren't entitled to work most of the time and get trapped in slave wages and atrocious conditions outside the protection of the law. The scare stories of families poncing off the state are the exception

Civil servants. Pay has goneup but job security and pension guarantees are now often non existant

Long term unemployed. Agree up to a point but can't see the Tories having the balls to tackle this problem. Sorry

Consultants. Nope. The genie is out the bottle with this one. Needs a very very bold government to change the culture of employing consultants on the basis that if things go wrong they can get blamed. I blame government targets and the media obsession with trying to find scapegoats.

then why use the reference point " and the same Sweden which has enjoyed a far better standard of living than we ever have since the war " ? why not , for instance , since 1930 or 1950 ?? I know the sole reason that sweden has had a higher standard of living than us isnt solely paying for ww2, but again i'll ask the question , would'nt you agree that not taking part gave them something of a head start ?? and again i'll ask about norways oil reseves per capita ?

I don't think the reason socialist Sweden has had a better standard of living than the UK for the past 60 years (and counting) is down to the fact that they weren't in WW2.

And I think I'm going to bow out of this discussion on that point.

Norway, Oil and gas obvioulsy assists, also a dependency on public services, partly for survival.

We have just paid off the Marshall Fund debt!

In some respects that we were generally the first to put in public services and utlities, means that they are more outmoded, more inefficient, dilapidated and of course, the post war lack of investment have meant that to restore these utilities to modern standards requires huge investment.

On the other side, the fact that we seem more willing to invest in war than protecting our young, in Trident than to our Pensioners, in roads than rail.

The nordic countries invest in the child and the old. They still believe in the cradle to grave philosophy.

Means that we pay a lot of tax for minimal visual improvements in our core services..
