Took a photo of some berries and got a pic of the cliffs with someone standing stupidly close to the edge

Brighton. NOT KEMPTOWN!
I have a Nikon D80 with an 18 - 105 lens which I bought off a mate quite cheap.
Although I've studied the manual, I'm still baffled by all the jargon and the swithches and knobs on the camera.
My motto used to be, "Put it on green and click".
As the popular consensus of opinion on here seems to be put it on P, I've done so. Then I click.
The automatic focus switches on the camera and lens are still on. I can't see what's different with the photos I've taken recently on this setting compared to the green.
Are there any recommended web sites where I can start to learn how to perhaps pick up some advice in laymans' language so I can take advantage of what I'm told is a pretty good camera?
Any advice would be great.
Your help is much appreciated.
I can't believe it's over two years since I posted this. The reason I've replied to my own comment is to encourage others that may think that grasping all that goes with this hobby is impossible, to keep going.
I've now upgraded my camera to a Nikon D7100, (I understand most of the knobs and buttons now), never use the green (auto) setting, now shoot in RAW and hence forced to carry out the "digital processing" operation.
I'm still no Lord Lichfield, but now think I understand what you need to do to get a good photo, and I'm looking forwards to what I learn in the next couple of years.
Here's a couple from yesterday evening.

Gorgeous colours in that wisteria.

The flowers here caused me to dig back into some of my flower close ups.
Again just standard macro setting on my Nokia N8.
Again from my allotment in May 2012.
Sorry to be a bit indulgent but I'm blown away by creation in action. Oriental poppy emergence is an amazing sight to behold.

This seems to make nonsense of buying an expensive DSLR and macro lens. Not sure I could do any better, probably worse.
