Yeah, I saw that about being bottom of their range when I did a bit of research. Plus it's old. On the other hand, it would be my first dslr camera, so it'll probably still impress me. It's also good that no one here so far has said to avoid it.

The lenses would be quite useful for some bird and wildlife photography reasonably close I suppose, and then for the really long reach I could attach just the body to my spotting scope which will be an improvement over my phone digiscoping.

If I'm happy with the quality of it then future investment would just go into upgrading the spotting scope to get even further reach, seeing as I'm clearly not going to get anywhere near the same reach from a camera telephoto lens without spending an absolute fortune.

I think that's right from what I've understood so far?

Yeah, I mean, if nothing else, you'll learn about focal lengths and what you really need.

Again, it's good value, so a decent starting kit.

Digiscoped just before dusk yesterday on about 40x zoom.

I decided to pass on getting a DSLR and upgrade my spotting scope in the end. But as you can see, because I'm still using a pretty standard phone, images aren't that great.

Whilst bird watching someone got chatting and showed me images he'd got on a Sony Cybershot DSC hx60. Tiny little point and shoot with 30x zoom. It was a revelation! A barn owl in flight no less!, was just one of many lovely shots. I've no chance of that really with my scope and phone.

So now I'm thinking of eventually going down this route for my wildlife photography rather than lug a DSLR and extra lenses around. Should give me the freedom to capture birds in flight or fleeting moments whilst still digiscoping for very long range birds that aren't in a hurry. Also, a compact will just fit in my pocket so I can have it with me all the time.

So, has anyone used a Sony DSC HX99? In particular, what is the experience with it for insects?, as that greatly interests me too. It'll be used almost exclusively for wildlife photography. Any thoughts appreciated.

Bridge cameras are disappointing in the poor light of an English winter. The Sony may be better?

Still after recommendations please.

Took this on my Redmi Note 9 Pro through my Svbony 406p spotting scope today. About 45x zoom.
A bit windy and my tripod is fairly basic.
It's not the greatest image, as you can see.

I didn't buy a DSLR in the end, having gone for the spotting scope instead. If I do buy a camera, I've decided to go down the pocketable route instead with a used Nikon a1000. 35x zoom in my pocket for birds up in trees etc when walking in the woods.

What I want to knows is this. What's the cheapest camera body only 2nd hand option from mpb I could get that would give me a decent step up from my phone when attached to my spotting scope?

This is the only other half decent effort.

Basically the digiscoping set up isn't very fluid. I can't really track anything in flight with the tripod and set up I have. I just get it fixed on an area I know they're flying through and just hit the bluetooth shutter button and hope for the best.

There was a pair up in the air giving brilliant courtship displays for a good while today. Would have been nice to have a decent set up to capture it. No matter, as had great views of all the action through binoculars.

Captures the full range of hand gestures beautifully including the classic Harvey Smith which originates from well before Harvey Smith. But surely this youth knows nothing of Harvey or English long bowmen for that matter.
