I'm confused - third party lenses for the Canon would also require an AF motor wouldn't they?

Auto focus. It's actually an old lens that Sigma "chipped" to work with digital cameras. My 70D drives it via the usual contacts, same as any Canon lens.

Have you got a link to show that your Sigma 105 doesn't have a motor, or that your Canon does?

Sorry, no, I don't know the technical details, only that it works (ie. I use it) the same way as my Canon lens.
