Interesting amendment to the Queen's Speech to be voted on today, regarding access to abortion. Some tories wil revolt.

Edit, Also Umunna's amendment on Brexit, which is a good thing, though not for Labour.

Umunna is another one who doesn't respect the referendum result. All those people who voted labour thinking they would respect the vote are being lied too.

A great example of this is my own constituency of East Worthing & Shoreham. A 16,000 Tory majority reduced to 5,000, simply by having a good local candidate presenting a manifesto which addressed the concerns of people beaten down by endless years of Tory austerity, while appealing to the kindness of their fellow citizens who are doing OK. It was THAT which resonated in our comparatively comfortable (with pockets of extreme poverty) bit of West Sussex.

A manifesto of hope and fairness, the opposite of Tory appeals to naked self interest. The number of comfortably off people I spoke to who said 'I voted Tory in the past but I am ashamed of the food banks and the homelessness in this country and am very happy to pay more to live in a more caring society...'A manifesto which is resonating for sure. Half the population want taxes increased to end austerity.

do you think it will last to the next election though? how will the Labour message play out when austerity has ended, the pay freezes lifted etc, how does Labour address the contrast with northern and midland seats with the reverse anacdote "always voted Labour, wont be this time" reported by Labour MPs and canvassers? i wonder if thats been overlooked and forgotten in back-patting of doing better than expected. Labour's manifesto was not offering us to pay more for services, but relying on borrowing. will they change that to increased taxation, or try the same approach again, if so will it work if interest rates are rising by then?

So backbench MP Chuka Umunna's amendment is now Labour party policy then?

They can't be trusted.

and The Tories can? Scottish Conservatives, Anna Soubry and Co on the backbenches, a shambles cabinet divided and full of remainers all waking up to the difficulties ahead on Brexit, plus The DUP to keep onside. I can understand your paranoia.

Nah, he'll be representing his constituents which is afterall what he is there for. They can get rid next time if he doesn't.

I must say that I don't understand this 'rebellion' thing. It's only a rebellion because the Tories have made it so: Labour aren't whipping it because abortion is seen a conscience vote - why can't the Tories do the same? If they did, all talk of rebellion would vanish.
