The German model is about recycling supermarket food past it's shelf life so it doesn't get wasted/thrown in the skip. It was born from environmental issues, not poverty. And when you've saved all this food who you going to give it to? Obviously the less well off. It's hardly a like-for-like comparison.

It certainly does, and speaking on a daily basis to Germans, it's clear that the problems are not going away.

It's no wonder the Germans aren't happy about bailing out the Greeks, when they have people using food banks at home.
