I'm a conservative and also abide by the law. I just don't agree with this, freedom of choice is eroded. I don't see why the government needs to get involved in a deal between two parties.

What like a deal to sell dangerous drugs to teenagers, or a deal to market child pornography, or a deal to provide trafficked slave labour to an employer? You wouldn't want the government to get involved in any of that through the legislative process?

When a majority grouping discriminates against a minority grouping it is not comparable to a minority having the right to exclude people who are not members of their group. The numbers tell their own story:

81.90% of the UK population is white.
97.5% of the UK population is straight.

Places that allow people not in these groups to gather together offer community and camaraderie.
Places that only allow people in these groups to participate wield power held by the majority over those in the minority in a discriminatory fashion.

Imagine a quiz in school where boys face off against girls (roughly 50/50). Now imagine it is 29 kids in the class vs one ginger kid. The first grouping doesn't discriminate while the second one is clearly troubling because of the imbalance of power it creates.

Exactly - they get changed by due democratic process (sometimes influenced by campaigning), and when they do, I'm happy to abide by the new law.

You're not necessarily happy to abide by the new law - you are willing to abide by it. You may dislike it very much indeed, and actively campaign to change it, but you will still abide by it while it exists.

So it's ok to have a men only rule, or is that discriminating?

This isn't the same thing. There are good reasons that these are against the law. Your examples have extranalities and ramifications to the association. There is no third party involvement when someone wants you to bake a cake for them or book a holiday.

I think context is needed here. If I am booking into a hotel at Gatwick airport the night before a flight, then it makes no difference whether its a gay, straight or whatever, and it would be wrong to have it as "straight only" or "gay only". However I go to an "exclusively" gay resort in Gran Canaria each year.(there are lots of them) The fact that it is advertised as such means that I know my husband and I can go and have a nice relaxing time with like minded people. It also means that anyone who isn't gay would not book and find themselves surrounded unexpectedly by a load of gay people relaxing naked by the pool etc. which could be uncomfortable for ALL concerned, to say nothing of the possibility of taking young sons or daughters with them The fact that the OPs gf saw the advertising she knows that it would possibly be not where she wanted to go for two weeks in the sun. I would expect the OP and GF are quite pleased to know that they haven't booked themselves in to a gay resort

it legal to offer gay only resorts- well there is no mention of where the resort in question is, so it may well be legal, it may also just be advertising itself as a gay resort so that potential guests know what to expect. What would the OP say if they had turned up to a gay resort unknowingly , in the middle of say Fetish week,or Bear week etc

I know someone who was booked into a gay hotel and was given a lot of grief from a straight guest who took great exception to the fact that there were gay people holding hands, kissing etc,

I had a bit about that in the post but decided to remove it as it muddies the water because it is more about power than the size of groupings. Although statistically, the UK is 51% women we all know that lots of things are still stacked in men's favour (BBC pay, glass ceiling, etc.).

If you have a men only changing room and a women only changing room nobody is getting discriminated against.
If you have a men only golf club and no women only golf club you are discriminating against a minority (based on power held).

Our Prime Minister is a woman. Seems like this is being made up as we go along.

Hi I'm OP, the advert clearly stated Gays Only not Adult only! I have absolutely no qualms or worries being in a gay environment or establishment. Surely if you like the look of hotel and all it has to offer you can go! Why does it have to state Gay Only! Would I get kicked out if I decided to have a snog with the other half, I'm pretty sure the other patrons don't give a toss if we are heterosexual and if they did that's there problem! Isn't it my right to go where I wish as long as I'm breaking no law! As far as I'm aware passports do not state sexuality! Hope you see my point?

With respect, it's not about you.

The cake analogy is a difficult one because it wasn't a wedding cake. The cake was ordered with a request for decoration, which said Support Gay Marriage (which is still illegal in Northern Ireland) The bakers refused because it was a political statement.
Would you refuse to ice a cake which said Support Britain First or Support the Nazis?

Stonewall got their way in saying it was about discrimination and refusing a service to gay people.

I wonder what would happen if a B&B, Hotel or Taxi company advertised Straight only. There have been recent cases where B&B owners have been prosecuted for discriminating against Queers. Does it only work one way? I suppose Gay only is classified as positive discrimination. The Whole World has gone mad. Certain groups generate hatred up on themselves!!

Ask yourself why would a place advertise as 'straight only'?

Then ask the same about a 'gay only' place ?

You should, with reasoned consideration, come up with the solution.

If you cannot then stick with your 'generate hatred up on themselves' concept. Bless-ed ignorance.

With respect...IT IS...because I ASKED THE QUESTION! All I was merely asking at time of starting thread was are you allowed to state Gay Only on an advertisement?

I was referring more to you typing that you'd have "no qualms or worries" about going to resort where the majority were gay. I was trying to say the Gay Only rule is not about excluding straight people as much as it's about what some gay people may feel comfortable with. I can't realistically imagine that someone who wishes to spend a holiday in the company of exclusively gay people would prefer to do so in their day to day life when not on holiday.
I have no idea about the legality of such a rule but I can understand completely why it's there.

you may have no qualms about being in a gay environment, but sadly lots of people still do, and should you have found yourselves booked in with us( and even though it says "gay exclusive" nothing to stop u booking at all) , you wouldn't get kicked out for having a snog with your other half,in fact I am sure you would actually have a great time- we are a very welcoming bunch on the whole! BUT there are still plenty of places where if I snog my other half not only can I get kicked out, I'm quite likely to get a good kicking ! The fact that it says Gays only indicates that its adult surely?
In an ideal world there would be no "need" for gay, straight, or whatever places, but its not an ideal world. Should you and your lady book into the resort I go to, you would have no issue from anyone else there, over the years there have been straight couples there, with no issues at all from either groups, however, whilst you may be quite "sexuality" blind there are plenty of others who aren't. Surely it is best to label the resort for what it is, imagine a group of less enlightened older teens /young 20 somethings on a lads holiday finding themselves in a predominantly gay complex. When we go away, all anyone wants is to have a good relaxing time,if a place is labelled as gay, then everyone knows and will prevent problems arising.

This. If you are saying straight only it suggests a homophobic intolerence towards gays. Gay only holiday suggests a safe environment for like minded people to mix without discrimination or judgement, I am not saying I agree by the way but there is a difference.

Thank you for putting your views across so eloquently and concise... I understand your points and feel there really are some numbskulls in this world! It's just very sad that in this day and age someone has to label a hotel as Gay Only!

Thank you :) its the numbskulls that ruin it for us all! I do understand your points by the way- I really wish everyone had the same attitude as you- live and let live. I also agree with your point that you should be allowed to book into any resort you want, However, having been in a situation in the so called enlightened UK where my husband and I were literally just sitting next to each other having a beer at a friends engagement party, no kissing or even holding hands, and feeling so threatened by the looks, comments and thinly veiled threats that we just wanted to leave at the earliest possible opportunity, and genuinely feared for our safety ,it is still necessary for us to know where we can be safe and relaxed and ourselves- especially on holiday

They've had age discrimination in holidays for ages: Club 18-30 and Saga to name two at different ends of the spectrum. (Although back in the 1980s I used to do some IT work for Club 18-30 and in those days if you were over 30 and absolutely insisted on going they'd let you go. Not sure if that's changed).
