Former Yeovil Town bad boy given a second chance by old boss
9:00am Thursday 15th October 2009

By Steve Sowden »

FORMER Yeovil Town manager Russell Slade has given an ex-Glovers player a "second chance" to rebuild his football career.

Attacking midfielder Gary Roberts is, without doubt, a good player, but his off-the-field behaviour has got him into trouble on several occasions.

One incident surrounding a Family Day event at Huish Park in the summer saw Yeovil boss Terry Skiverton showing him the exit door and it eventually led to his contract with the Glovers being severed.

But now Roberts - a free agent - has been given another chance by Slade at Brighton and Hove Albion and he scored for the Seagulls last night in a 1-1 draw with Leyton Orient.

It is understood that Brighton are taking a close look at Roberts - including his off-the-field discipline - to see whether he can be of benefit to the League One side in the long-term.

And Slade said: "Gary is trying to get his career and life back on track and he wants to re-establish himself as a professional footballer.

“He is still only young and has made some mistakes in his life but he deserves a second chance.

“There is no doubting his football ability but he has to prove himself in other areas. That is going to take time, one small step at a time.”

But The Argus - a paper owned by the Yeovil Express' parent company Newsquest, has reported that Roberts launched his "footballing rehab" in spectacular style last night when the goal he scored was described as a "stunning strike."

Roberts confessed to alcohol and gambling problems after his contract was severed at Yeovil.

And the 22-year-old has linked up again with Slade following a 26-day residential programme at Sporting Chance, the clinic set up in Hampshire by Tony Adams eight years ago.

The Argus reported that Roberts impressed in the centre of the park last night with his "energy, composure in possession and range of passing" before he tired.

He put Albion ahead in the 18th minute with a sweet strike from 30 yards with his supposedly weaker left foot, which found the net via the underside of the crossbar.

Roberts tried to embarrass Orient keeper Lee Butcher 20 minutes later with an audacious attempt from a free-kick just inside the Albion half, which was only just too high.

He was not the only trialist in the Brighton line-up. The attack was led by Amodou Abdullei, a 22-year-old Nigerian target man from German club SSV Ulm 1846.

Orient’s equaliser in the 57th minute, from Harry Baker, was every bit as good as Roberts’ effort and from similar distance

****************************

I think the 26 day rehab programme is the one that footballers who are seriously addicted go on. Warren Aspinal thread spoke about this yesterday. Great to see us thinking about giving him a second chance - we all need those.

this could turn out to be a MASTERSTROKE from slade

if we can sort his head out a bit, i can see him being so eager to impress and prove his doubters wrong that he'll be playing his socks off

the lad clearly has talent, and hopefully we're the ones to help him prove it

Quite so but where does he fit in with Dicker, Crofts, Navarro,Thornhill and Tommy Fraser?

Can he play left midfield or is he predominantly centre midfield player. If he can I would let Thornhill go back to Forest as he hasnt impressed me at all and then let Navarro go out on loan to a div 2 club. Unfortunately pushes the likes of Cox and even more so Livermore and McLeod in to the background.

I love this. I realise it's only two sentences in a long article; but there's a mention of a random Nigerian that WE have on trial in a West Country newspaper. Extremely bizarre!

I would imagine BensGrandad has it pretty much dead on. He would be a straight replacement for Thornhill. I'm not sure he'd let Navarro out on loan, but it would definitely spell the end of Livermore's time here.

You are not allowed to say that as I know nothing about football apart from reccomending signing Trevor Stevens when at Burnley as 15 year old and Paul Rogers when at Sutton but who cares really.

He gives the impression, rightly or wrong, that he is isnt that interested in playing just picking up a wage. As I say I may be way off of the mark but that is my impression of him.

A Colchester fan posted a similar opinion about KM on here shortly after he was signed by Micky Adams - seems a waist of some undoubted talent to me.

Roberts could be a great signing. If we can agree in his contract for regular blood tests for alcohol and keep an eye on him I can't see why a contract to the end of the season with an option for the club for next season (in case he really performs) cannot work for everyone.
