Gary Lineker is to step back from presenting Match of the Day until an agreement is reached on his social media use - BBC statement.
It follows an impartiality row over comments he made criticising the government's new asylum policy.
In a tweet, the presenter had compared the language used by the government to set out its plan to "that used by Germany in the 30s".

Rhetoric like calling boat people illegal immigrants when they are not illegal.
If they are already illegal, why is the new bill being prepared to make them illegal?
Calling them illegal in Parliament, in news broadcasts, in the press etc winds up the racists. You get scenes like the man petrol bombing the Dover base, setting fire to a police wagon in Knowsley, and the fracas in Rotherham outside the hotel. The Home Secretary saying billions trying to get here when it is tens of thousands. All designed to induce fear and anger.

Language is very important and the language being used stirs up hatred, This is what Gary said.
So it is linked to the government policy then.

This country bears no relation to 1930’s Germany. Millions were on the road to be murdered for being Jewish or Gypsies, gay, academics, left wing, Slavs or black.

In Dec 2024 Labour will form a government. Starmer will not be inheriting a nation or a people, remotely like Germany from January 1933. The airwaves are filled with people siding with Lineker, in 1930’s Germany doing the equivalent would’ve been a death sentence or being beaten to a pulp by the SA or SS.

Braverman and then Lineker has raised the rhetoric, both are exaggerating and some. It helps no one, just fuelling the polarisation of views in a media and social media age.

Meanwhile Sweden, Germany, Italy and France almost automatically are deporting vast numbers of Albanians. Under the radar in eternally navel-gazing UK.

It's quite a sad enditement of the state of political threads on here and social media generally that this needs saying. There is plenty of ammunition to slag off the Tories without reaching for moronic Nazi Germany comparisons.

The problem with these twitter accounts (and this applies to Alan Sugar and Andrew Neil) is they contain personal opinions but are also used to promote whatever programme the individual is in. From recollection Lineker breaks the running order on MOTD.

I think a sensible compromise would allow presenters to hold personal even political opinions but refrain from talking about the programme they present.

No, I don't believe that which is a good thing because I am not 100% Anglo Saxon.
I don't believe this is the Fourth Reich.

I am puzzled as to why you have exaggerated my beliefs to mock me, when I point out that there are methods being used which were used in the beginnings of a fascist state. Warnings of problems ahead, which can still be avoided before there is a point of no return.

What problems? Everyone’s saying the ECHR will block this and Starmer will take power in just 21 months.

Lineker hugely exaggerated. I’ll mention again that Jews, Gypsies, gays, the left, academics, Slavs and blacks from January 1933 started to face being beaten to a pulp, their windows were smashed, arson, they were ostracised, assets stolen, state posters mocked them, state newsreels spread lies, lies were spread to encourage beating them, they were squeezed out of professions and the arts, the occasional being kicked to death by organised mobs. There was no hope as the National Socialist German Workers Party cancelled true elections forever. I wonder how much of a student of history Lineker really is?

The oldest trick in the post 1945 book. Matthew Syed (a Labour voter) said on Newsnight this week that “like 1930’s Germany” has been reeled out at many a political discourse in post WW2 Europe.

I expect all fans going to Leeds tomorrow to chant their support for the Government lest our game also be pulled from MOTD

Will be telling to see who steps up and take on the duties tomorrow night

As an aside, it would be typical Brighton for us to be on first on the very night the actual football takes a back seat in the discussion!

I urge you to write to the BBC complaints if you feel as I do that this is beyond the BBCs remit Linikers comments might or might not be appropriate and he may have insulted some Tories but he is a football presenter and not a political correspondent

Syed on Channel 4 news now talking about this with Alastair Campbell also interviewed.

If you miss it, it's well worth watching on the 4+1 channel in an hour's time.
