Gary Lineker is to step back from presenting Match of the Day until an agreement is reached on his social media use - BBC statement.
It follows an impartiality row over comments he made criticising the government's new asylum policy.
In a tweet, the presenter had compared the language used by the government to set out its plan to "that used by Germany in the 30s".

They said it couldn’t happen here.
It hasn’t. And it won’t. Not an admirer of the Tories, but even they aren’t anywhere near to National Socialism.

And none of us, black, white, migrants or Jewish, are being beaten to a pulp for expressing views disagreeing with Braverman or Lineker.

The UK’s a good place. I know it’s trendy to hate on our country. Empty kettles make most most noise, a steady minority who paint the picture of an awful country.
It’s far from awful, but it could & should be a whole lot better. Sh*t like this is in my opinion a sign that we as a nation are slithering further & further to the right.

Why do you think the Tories keep talking about leaving the ECHR and having a bonfire of EU laws. Those are my human rights as well.
Fortunately, the House of Lords has already said they will bounce it back to the Commons, which they are entitled to do, because it wasn’t in the 2019 manifesto.
There isn’t enough time to get it through before the general election which must be called by Dec 2024.

That’s one of the things I was saying.

It doesn't seem to apply to other presenters like Alan Sugar or David Attenborough.

Fiona Bruce even excused Stanley Johnson's GBH last night on Question Time.
Yes, I would guess it depends on his contract - and that's not public as far as I know. I do think the BBC have rather stupidly backed themselves into a corner with this. I would imagine any contract would mostly be about not criticising the BBC rather than the government.

Having foolishly made their stand on this the BBC will probably have to back down. It would have been better to focus on what is said on the programme and let people say what they want in their own time.

What problems? Everyone’s saying the ECHR will block this and Starmer will take power in just 21 months.

Lineker hugely exaggerated. I’ll mention again that Jews, Gypsies, gays, the left, academics, Slavs and blacks from January 1933 started to face being beaten to a pulp, their windows were smashed, arson, they were ostracised, assets stolen, state posters mocked them, state newsreels spread lies, lies were spread to encourage beating them, they were squeezed out of professions and the arts, the occasional being kicked to death by organised mobs. There was no hope as the National Socialist German Workers Party cancelled true elections forever. I wonder how much of a student of history Lineker really is?
so what did it start with?

Politics aside. Hasn't Lineker already got form for breaking BBC guidelines on making political statements ?

A yellow card followed by a red card seems about right - if he doesn't like the guidelines he doesn't have to work for them.

You do know that Gary has housed refugees at his home, which is why his brother can joke about it?
He isn't all talk and no action.
He’s to be commended although as others have pointed out, it’s easier to house migrants when you’re a multi millionaire and have a spare wing or two at your abode.

I’m team Gary, but I think he needs to respect his position at the (cough) impartial BBC.

I thought Lineker made the decision? How will the BBC have to back down?

When you strip this down it’s actually down to free speech. Love him or loathe him Gary Lineker only expressed his opinion, I’m sure there are any number of NSCers whose Fathers, Grandads and Great Grandads fought in WW2 for democracy and freedom.

Was it worth it, when the national broadcasting company is acting as a censor, straight out of the Goebbels playbook.

I hope all the pundits follow Ian Wright’s stance and don’t appear on MOTD until Lineker returns?
Fantastic - I hope we can now just have the matches played shown for a longer time and no punditry in between. Sack the lot of them and save the licence payers money

I’ve not heard anyone say that Starmer or his shadow cabinet are Communists or Soviets. No doubt someone has somewhere.
You can bet in the run-up to the next general election, the Mail, Express, Sun and Telegraph will be warning that the Marxist Left are waiting in the wings to overthrow Starmer after polling day and impose Communism on Britain - they made the same warnings about Blair; "What lies behind the smile?'

As always, the Tories can dish it out, but they cry their eyes out when it's thrown back at them. Like the bully in the school playground, they play the victim card when someone stands-up to them.

Let me introduce you to Alf Dubs. A Czech Jew who aged 6, managed to get on the Kindertransport organised by the wonderful Nicolas Winton who saved 669 children from the death camps.
He is now a peer in the House of Lords.

I don’t understand?

How near do they have to get? Look at this National Front poster from the 70s.
