Gary Lineker is to step back from presenting Match of the Day until an agreement is reached on his social media use - BBC statement.
It follows an impartiality row over comments he made criticising the government's new asylum policy.
In a tweet, the presenter had compared the language used by the government to set out its plan to "that used by Germany in the 30s".

He asserted that the language used was similar to that used by the Nazi’s . In this he is correct. He did not accuse Braverman of being a Nazi. Interestingly I had the same thought when I heard her statement and that was before Linekers.

If he had said he agreed with braverman we would not be having this debate because the bbc and the gammons in the Tories wouldn’t have said anything. The fact that Sugar, Neill and Brady have all made political statements that haven’t been challenged because they were not critical of the Tories speaks volumes. Stop trying to defend the indefensible.

The Nazi’s: The road to power on bbc sounds is worth a listen albeit a depressing one. The behaviours and attitudes of the major players in the twenties and early thirties are frighteningly and depressingly familiar….
I think likening the current situation to Nazi Germany is definitely hyperbolic and extreme though. Italy, for example, is far closer to that level of thinking and they are still miles off.

For about the 15th time, he didn't say the situation was like Nazi Germany. He said that the  language was similar to that used during the rise of the Nazis in Germany.

The tone is right out of the Nazi handbook, frighteningly so. Braverman must have known this but still thought it was a great idea or she’s as thick as pigshit and wasn’t aware. Neither are acceptable from a Home Secretary.

It is nice that you have taken such and interest in my posting style.

I assume you are a recycled poster from another age as I don't recall many interactions with you?

I will remember not to except too much from you.

Damm my bad luck though. I feel like I am missing out on quite the stimulating discussion.

I read today that BBC executives only discovered yesterday afternoon that their contract with The Premier League does not include the commercial rights to have commentary from The Premier League's service, hence the lack of it last night. 😀

For the 16th time, I support Lineker on this issue and his right to speak out when so many others have on the other side of the political divide without any issue.

Anyone who jumps immediately to likening something they don’t like to Nazism, either directly or as in this case indirectly, has already undermined their opinion though, because it is just pure hyperbole.

He said the language being used was similar to 30's Germany, that's not the same as comparing a policy to the holocause that followed.
Clutching at straws and semantics, he referenced the period regardless as a basis for comparison. I really don't think he should have, personally, aside from the BBC impartiality aspect.

The 2 things that all those claiming it is actually the same as 1930s language, actually share in common, is in knowing little of the true realities of 30s Nazi Germany language

The language in 1930s Germany being used for a planned genocide, is absolutely not the same as an incompetent home secretary, dealing badly with 1 policy issue.

The problem you and people determined to take offence from the tweet and link it to things Lineker has not said is that the tweet itself is too nuanced.

Where has Lineker said the language around the Tory’s immigration policy is the same (identical) as the language in 30’s Germany?

You are purposely missing the whole point of the tweet.

It’s meant to shock but not to offend. Lineker wanted to draw similarities, not direct comparisons.

I acknowledge that this sort of subtlety sails over the heads of tabloid readers (including the Mirror) but broadsheet readers (including the Telegraph and Times) should clearly have enough gumption to understand where Lineker drew the line.

Your repost will be, ‘we all knew what he meant!’.

Did we? Perhaps you only hear what you want to hear?

Well, they’ve strongly denied and are showing on a channel. Of course, that won’t be enough for the
Ah so that's what Lineker really meant, not what you extrapolated that wasn't there!

Ask yourself this honestly, are all of those truly shocking crimes of genocide you list against all sorts of ethnicities, committed by one of the most evil murderous regimes in history, comparative in messaging to a shit British government and its half baked policy on stopping rising numbers of people submitting to criminal gangs and coming here in Dinghys?.... like really just the same?

Whatever you answered is your opinion, youre perfectly entitled to it.

If you then broadcast that on SM and your employer has a SM policy and they believe your opinion damages them or their reputation, do they have to just shut up and say or do nothing? Even if they're the public broadcaster and your wages are tax money.

Because that's not how it works for most employees including most of those in the BBC......... that said, maybe Lineker hadn't signed anything, so he could argue he's not contractually bound by that, but should he be the same as others, yes.

This was a small resolvable issue imho, until some berk wrongly decided to suspend him and its gone nuts....... but from here on in, I dare say, that whatever happens with Lineker, every person representing the BBC will be made to sign up to their SM policy, as most in real world do too
You’re absolutely right.

A small resolvable issue.

Until the Tory Government and their pet Dobermans, the Mail, Express, Sun and Telegraph started kicking off. The BBC Poodle just submitted meekly
And then it was the Government - “well it’s a BBC matter”. So it’s now the BBC’s fault. Sharp and Davie brought it on themselves!
This Government is full of tossers, liars, charlatans and cheats - oh and let’s chuck in immoral, crooks, insidious evil Bastds while we’re at it.
A shot show that no one wanted - but caused by them and stoked by them so that the real message gets lost

It's the language the government are using to generate resentment against refugees that's the issue - 'waves' of refugees, painting them all as criminals. That's the comparison to 30's Germany, which is accurate.
