Exactly.

Sometimes you need big state interference, to save people from themselves and vultures. @Harry Wilson's tackle … your thoughts?
I am not a gambler, but WRT addiction my views are the same as they are about booze. Both are socially acceptable, but those with an addiction turn a source of pleasure into pain. So I would restrict gambling (and the advertisement of it) in exactly the same way I'd treat the way we deal with booze. That's no ads on TV or billboards. However one can buy lovely whiskey on Amazon so one ought to be able to buy gambling products online. Bespoke gambling sites need better regulation with displays of odds only.

Skybet looks like this right now:

It looks like special offers on charging seems to be the norm.
A mainstream booze site is much the same, albeit I had to register my age to proceed (cursory, I know).

As for casinos, proof of pay on entry and a pre-dermined spend limit, with forcible ejection if customer cuts up rough. This may happen in casinos anyway.

What does need some controls is spend on scratch cards and the like. Regularly I see customers rock up at Morrisons, often on disability scooters, and hand over many ten and 20 pound notes, and then sit there scratching them off. I'd like a spend limit on that of maybe £20. They can then scoot off to another supermarket. On reflection this is probably an expression of my distaste rather than any realistic expectation that lives would be transformed etc.

Does that help?

I would put gambling and booze together, below fags in the list of thinks that should not be freely available and easily available to kids.

At the end if the day, people hell bent on indulgence will indulge. If it gets to the 'I have an illness' stage then it gets tricky because, as we hear time and time again, people will remortgage the home and destroy their family to place a bet, and when it gets to that stage the illness may be terminal.

I remember watching Neptune Collange turn my new television into a take away curry when it pipped Sunnyhillboy right at the post in 2012 National

In my personal experience, gambling in it’s entirety is a bad luck story, I have a real issue with the whole gambling industry to be honest, betting companies are forever bleating on about responsible gambling but I’ve seen with my own eyes they actively encourage problem gambling.
There’s no such thing.
It’s no different to coming up with advertising slogans for responsible heroin injecting.
The normalisation of gambling is an ongoing disgrace.
Shame on successive governments, betting companies and advertisers.

Several years ago I hired a box at lingfield to celebrate my wife’s special birthday with close friends and family.
I won some money on a race and planned to put all my winnings on a horse in the next race that had a name that strangely coincided with a marketing programme that I’d worked on ( please don’t ask).
I won much more that I expected and put an each way bet on said horse.
Said horse (“Pragmatist”) romped home at something like 150/1 (my memory has faded). I took the money from an amazed lady on the Tote, ordered a lot more champagne, and the winnings paid for the entire day - just.
A mate also had a smaller bet on said horse and applied his not-inconsiderable winnings to the impending bill of his imminent wedding. Which was nice.

Oh hang on!? “Hard luck stories” ….. hard luck on the Tote I guess, and try as I did, I never saw the horse declared again!

As a student 30 years ago..
I picked 5 horses.. 10p win doubles, 10p win trebles and a 50p roll up..
The first two won at 6/1 , 8/1.. third horse dead heat at 4/7 but stewards enquiry.. the other 2 win at good odds too..
The enquiry took forever and my horse was placed second... I paid off my small over draft with the doubles and trebles... but what if...
I dont bet big

It’s knowing that the chiefs at 365 for example pay themselves multi million pound bonuses whilst hundreds of customers lives are in ruin, the truth is the government and companies don’t care about people losing money because of the money it makes them both, if they really did they would be caps on how much people can play, ie’ you’d have to apply to be able to bet large amounts.

The unbelievable thing is that I could open an account now and put my entire life savings on a bet and no questions would even be asked, it’s shocking.

That being said I know this thread is going to be full of gamblers so sorry for derailing it guys :lolol:
That's very unlikely these days, although it may be possible with one or two betting companies. They are obliged to do affordability snd source of funds checks under the gambling regulations, firstly, to check you're not laundering dirty money and, secondly, to check what you can afford to lose.

The sooner they ban online slot machines the better!
The internet adds are encouraging the young and especially females too!
98% of gamblers lose.. The addiction is real :(
The government needs to ban online slots! If they don't.. they will see many hundreds committing suicide..

I had £200 on the nose for Clan Royal to win the Grand National back in the 80's. He'd been laid out to win the race and I was working out how to spend my winnings when it jumped the last fence clear of the field. The jockey lost his whip and couldn't steer Clan Royal around the 'elbow' and was overtaken by Amberleigh House . Had it won I'd have got 2.5k.

I went to the casino after the game on Saturday to kill some time, I had a thoroughly enjoyable evening chatting to all sorts of different people.

I lost quite a bit of money - overall I’m happy, I don’t expect to win and I had a great night.

I’ve learnt that any money I give to the bookies or casinos I won’t get back, there is that line in the film casino about keeping people playing for as long as possible, and it is 100% true!

I think schools should have a “life lessons” class and teach them that it is impossible to win as a punter - I doubt they will.

The problem with gambling is addicts use it to hit rock bottom, no addict wins and walks out, we need more support and help for people struggling and less enticing barrage of adverts.

I did the lottery some time ago and on the millionaire raffle, this came in; abc123456, I had abc124356.
I have also had 5 numbers come in. Really hoping for 3rd time lucky!
