I know we rarely do much in the January window, but suspect the defence will be looked at in terms of strengthening. Absolute priority.

I’ll be surprised if Imari Samuels isn’t on the bench soon, or maybe in the team against Fulham. He’s just about the only specialist left back still standing and was on the US tour (although he was played out of position as a CB when coming on as sub as I recall). Very fast if perhaps a little suspect when defending.

Veltman would be my 2nd name on the teamsheet after the skipper. We look a different team defensively when he plays and I get very apprehensive when he's not picked.

We bought Igor in part because he can cover LB. I would go with him Thursday.

I'm encouraged that @NotAndyNaylor mentions Samuels as squad cover since he knows what he's on about unlike so many kneejerkers on here.

Veltman just has to start every game.

I think we’ll see Igor and Milner (unfortunately) at left back until Perv is back. So unlucky with injuries but we really should have signed a specialist LB as cover.

Except both March and Lamptey have been terrific covering LB: there was no case during the window for a new signing.

He hasn’t played 1 minute for 18 months, won’t be in first team until 2024, after several U21?run outs at some point hopefully
He’s training with the first team. I’m not sure he’s got another three months out.

Don’t understand why Veltman didn’t start yesterday. 5 days between Man City and Ajax games. He could then have a rest Vs Fulham at home.
Why ? He should play all 3. He's just had 2 weeks off and hasn't played all our games this season.

I really hope this rotation policy of de zerbi pays off.

Yeah - both were great in the few games they played there.

Except Lamptey is made out of breadsticks and March offers so much more on the right wing.

We should have signed left back cover. Looks like we tried to with Barco

We’ve just lost and seen Solly injured, plus I think seen conclusively that JM is not a viable option for right-back. So, it feels like we’re two players down.

Veltman has never stopped being the answer at right-back, without Solly we’re probably looking at Julio on the left. VdH and Lewis in the middle. Still feels like a pretty strong defence, but we’re not blessed with a lot of cover if there’s further injury. Is anyone pulling up trees in the under 21s?

EDIT: My mind had tricked me into forgetting about Lamptey. If we have Webster and Lamptey on the bench, or Lamptey on the left and Julio on the bench. That doesn’t feel too shoddy to me.

Everyone's been stretched by a lot of injuries, so we are certainly not alone, and it makes it more exciting in my funny way of thinking

Ryan Bertrand or some out of contract left back? Maybe rubbish idea, just putting out there
Out-of-contract players are usually out-of-contract for a reason. The chances that there’s one available and ready to play against the best wingers in the world are low.

I worked with someone older who raved about that team. He’d reel off the 11 names and their background. Lovely little era.

I love that kit.
Without checking: Powney, Henderson, Baxter, Bertolini, Gall, Turner, Gould, Collins, Bobby Smith, Jack Smith, Goodchild. Circa 1964? Kit Napier a bit later. Dawson, too. Exciting team with some very good players. Wingers who could dribble and cross. Great to watch.
