We loved it in Maderia, it felt a little like home, as it seemed we were the youngest people on the Island.
Our flight home was like a red cross airlift, where all the old codgers had tumbled down a labarda(sp) or 2.

It does have the worlds greatest garlic bread, &, wifey enjoyed cheese and banana with everything.

It is a beutiful island...the views from all over the island are nothing short of spectacular...My dad absolutely loved every minute of it...

Its very different to work here and can sometimes get lonely..but is much nicer to be here for a few months than be working in a temp job in an office.

I look after 38 hotels here....which one did you stay at?

we were trying to remember the other night, but couldn't.
It was too the right of the marina, as you look at it, next to the casino. A bit 70's looking, and gave the impression it was the last of the 'old' hotels before the new developments.

Really nice place very friendly, although are there still a 1000 and 1 dogs running about the place.
Wifey wanted to bring home an old man with her, as they all looked like "sweet unwashed monkeys".

Did you do the "toboggan" ride? That's assuming that they still do it down the cobbles (I think?)

Vankleek Hill, actually....
I'd say its a rareity that a loaded 747 to Sydney at minimum £700 a ticket is going to be grounded due to one staff memebr - BA especially have floating crew members for exactly that purpose....

I wish BA did.

A couple of weeks ago I had a 9 hour delay at Rome international airport due to the co-pilot bashing his head somehow and then being declared unfit to fly. We were then told that the flight would be delayed whilst another co-pilot was flown out from Gatwick.

In the end, the flight was cancelled as they couldn't rustle up another co-pilot. All the passengers were offered a later alternative flight to Heathrow or Gatwick. There were some pretty pissed off passengers, especially those that had connections.

They recently shut it for 3 months and gutted the whole place....

They had the grand re-opening the other night....it looks so nice..all new fresh look on the inside..brand new indoor pool and spa that looks well nice....

Granted the corridors and lights in the corridors that lead to the rooms look like sex lights......in sone 70s porn film..the facilities and marina views are some of the best on the island.

That is typical BA. I have arrived at the airport twice to be told that my flight from Toulouse had "gone technical" in London and I had been rebooked on the next flight. When I suggested that maybe they had two half empty flights and had consolidated them into one, the check in girl just smiled and said that was very possible. when I boarded the later flight combined with the earlier "tech" flight was still half empty.

Best not tell Wifey as we probably couldn't afford it now.

As you may know..I'm currantly working in Madeira,Portugal. I just had my dad & cousin over for a week to visit me.

They had an amazing time....that included boat trips, coach trips, helicopter ride, fire-work displays & meals in the mountains and the usual sun-bathing.

I dropped them at the airport this morning for their 12.30 flight back to manchester to find out that their plane was delayed by 7 fcuking hours..due to the fact that one staff member on the incoming flight was not well and couldnt return on the flight....

Nice one thomsons!

Well, bare in mind a few facts. For a start Thompsons don't have air crew stationed in Madeira, I very much doubt that any UK airline does because it's a small airport. Secondly, if a member of the aircrew is taken ill they have to be replaced, it's the law, not something they can avoid. Thirdly, as Madeira is not such a popular destination it's not so easy to fly in a replacement.

I could go on about crew hours and other safety issues but what would I know ? I only worked for a charter airline for nearly ten years.

So you'd rather have flown back with just one pilot ? :nono:

Have a flight booked with Thomsons next month though to be honest if thats how they treat their customers then think I might look at swapping or delaying. Surely they should have a spare crew on standby?

Sure they do, back in England. Have you any idea how far Madeira is from here ?

Im not 100% sure if they have told passengers the truth and theres no chance im phoning my dad to tell him the real reason just in-case the airline have given them a pack of lies....But If i was sat in the departure lounge for 7 hours looking at my plane sat there and because of one staff member not being there....I would not be happy at all...

For someone who is supposed to work in the travel industry you really don't much about it do you ?

Shit happens. It's not Thomsons regulations that mean they cant fly an understaffed plane. Your rellies had a great holiday, that's the main thing. Air travel is completely shit all round nowadays, and getting worse by the season. No getting away from it, and at least your dad & cousin got their outward leg OK, unlike, say, the poor buggers at Glasgow or Liverpool over the weekend. Grin and bear it mate, grin and bear it.

Why dont you get off your high horse....who gives two shi*s how long you've worked in the industry...Ive worked in it a couple of months and it has confirmed what I already thought.....the pays poor, the service is tin-pot and the airlines are shabby.....But hey thats life..when you see it close hand..you realise its not on!!

So you can go on defending the industry giving some politician answer for every little thing anybody brings up..but that still doesnt make-up for the fact all the passengers including my family members are stuck at a poor airport with nothing to do for over 8 hours...while as I ve just been informed all the crew are at a nearby 5* hotel....having dinner....

None of it alters the fact that an aircraft is sat surplus..because ONE crew member is not well....I work in the industry and personally think its a disgrace to leave people stranded like that..sometimes shi* does happen..but people pay lots of money and get one holiday a year due to financial reasons and the end of it leaves a very sour taste in ones mouth if it goes tits up.

The point is that I am not ranting like the ignorantmoron you are. If you had the foggiest idea of what you were saying it might be different. The plain fact is (I have already said this) THE FIGHT CANNOT OPERATE WITH LESS THAN MINIMUM CREW BY LAW. Are you too retarded to understand that ?

If the any airline was staffed to meet your 'high standards' cheap flights would not exist. Of course the airline could have offloaded a lot of passengers to stay legal but imagine how much you'd whine if it was one of your family that had to wait to the next day.

Instead of hurling abuse try getting a few facts straight. If ignorance is bliss you must be insanely happy.

Has anyone ever had experiences with Emirates? are they any good? they are the cheapest worldwide airline I can find so I am assuming that I can't expect much, ie, decent legroom, decent entertainment, decent food etc

Well surely they would have some backup staff on hand in case this was to ever happen.
