RIP a very good manager who we lost too soon. While here he changed our strip to all white, with blue edging, allegedly because he wanted us to be and play like Leeds.

Freddie Goodwin was the Albion manager for the first ever game I saw.
He was the manager of the club I fell in love with.
I dread to think how many games, players and managers I have seen since.

Thanks Freddie

RIP

Christ!! - I thought you meant the NSC poster at first. Yes, sad to hear he passed away. I started watching BHA with Archie Macauley as manager then Freddie took over in 1968ish.

That's about my pattern of starting as well.....

I was one of the fans who abused the Chairman when he was sacked.
R.I.P Freddie God Bless.

Me too - boxing day 1967 vs Gillingham.

RIP

Freddie took us from a poor team heading towards relegation. he brought in the likes of Alex Dawson, Nobby Lawton & Willie Bell before building with players like Eddie Spearritt & Peter O'Sullivan (think that was FG but gone before ever played).

Blimey, there's false memory syndrome about

FG wasn't sacked: he was poached by Birmingham. He didn't introduce the all-white strip - that was Pat Saward in the 1970/71 season. He wasn't in charge on Boxing Day 1967, he didn't take over until October 1968 and he didn't sign Nobby Lawton, that was Macauley

Yes, once again I stand corrected, Nobby Lawton bought by Archie Mac. It was Geoff Sidebottom & Barrie Wight he bought over from New York.

Clearly not sacked, a talented manager it would be difficult to hold once a bigger club came in. Interestingly we had a new pin badge based oin a design of two footballs, blue & white. When he went to Birmingham, their club badge changed to a similar design except one ball atop the other.

RIP. Did a decent job with us, and only just missed promotion in 1970 (I think we'd have been in the play-offs had they existed then, but stand willing to be corrected).

I've got the same memory as BG that it was Freddie Goodwin who had the strip changed to all white as he played for Leeds and had an admiration for Real Madrid. Possibly it came in after he left but I'm sure he instigated it.

Was manager for my first game too - was always spoken about in good terms. Played 120 games for Leeds too, so I wonder if he'll be remembered properly next Monday. I'd like to think so - and I hope the club considers this.

Sad news to hear. In my first season of watching The Albion as a youngster, he was the manager - the era of Kit Napier, Nobby Lawton, Alex Dawson, Dave Turner etc. I remember the build up to the the Wolves league Cup game like it was yesterday although my parents wouldn't let me attend.

R.I.P. Freddie.

I am after his time with the club but looking at his Wiki page he has an impressive playing CV and colourful managerial list.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Freddie_Goodwin

As Birmingham manager he must have been part of playing Trevor Francis, who I remember well and the million pound move to Forrest (I think the first million pound player). Was Freddie responsible for this deal or seen as developing Francis and partly responsible for this deal for the club.

I always love sportspeople that can play dual sports at the top level, Lancashire CCC and Manchester United says it all.

Fair enough. The first game with the white strip was after he'd left but it was only a few months after so he could well have instigated it. Hated that strip though - it wasn't Brighton
