thats tax for you though doc you buy into the system you cant pick and choose where it goes except when you vote for your team at the ballot box. plenty of people i dont want getting my tax money but democratically, seeing as thats the word of the day, is the only way i can change it. but i wont ever be able to get all the tax expenditure allocated perfectly where i want. and some of that will be far more costly than the Firm. dont think of it going to individuals, rather an institution that whatever you think of it is working for UK PLC.

Good point.

In a way it's no different really to whether you approve of us going to war in Iraq and Afghanistan or not. The money for it came from taxes and the people paying those taxes had no say in it

The British tax payer contributes towards the civil list which is only paid to the Queen & Duke of Edinburgh. This is in lieu of money from the Crown lands which is given to the government. The tax payer would be worse off if the arrangement ceased.
The system is ceasing and we won't be worse off.
Royal finances are in a transitional phase as the old system is phased out and a new Sovereign Grant funding model is introduced.
It will replace money from the Civil List, Government funds which cover the official expenses of the Queen and her household, and grants-in-aid.
Under the new grant, the Queen will receive 15% of the profits from the £6.7bn Crown Estate.
The grant for the 2012/13 financial year has already been set at £31m but for 2013/14, when the new formula begins, it is estimated to be worth £36m.
So all those who misquote the cost of the Queen to the tax-payer will have to accept the fact that they are wrong. We will not be paying her a penny in the future, but she will be handing us a nice fat profit. Unless, of course, the antis want to tell her to keep it.

Pro , rest of the world love them and bring so much revenue in . Ok they have a few issues in recent years but I think with William and Kate this will be a new era , Charles won't do a bad job in between !!

God Save the Queen !!!!!

I wish they'd change the words to the national anthem, though. I support our Queen but have no religion so don't like the 'God save' bit.

When the Irish did this they elected a Eurovision singer as their head of state. You want Lulu or Cliff Richard as head of state? Or maybe Cheryl Baker whipping off her skirt as she gets "crowned"

So, you would rather have a man who told another mans wife, he would like to be her Tampax, than an elected by popular vote winner?

not his greatest moment, and i dont approve of course, but you wouldnt know about it if it wasnt for the god awful british press. the press would be pushing morally dubious presidential candidates on you left right and centre, then working like billyo to tuck them up similarly, once in power.

So it's not possible to be a good politician if you're a singer? What about this guy?

I'm fairly sure that you can't. I always use the civil list versus the crown estate revenues in debates like this. I usually bring the Commonwealth into it as well.
There are no winners or losers in a debate like this. Everyone has their own opinion, very few change their mind.

In post #153, you more or less accused me of being jealous of the Royal family

You didnt read any of theBritish press when Prince George was born,or during the Queens Diamond jubilee? The arse licking was truely nausea inducing. Apparently the uchess of Cambridge, was the only woman to have ever given birth to a baby, and we should all be jolly grateful that the Queen has agreed to rule over for so long

i have after LLFs post, I want to vote live on ITV for Steven Hawkings.

Perhaps my examples were a little of the wall, but the basic principle remains the same.( and people have voted for Boris Johnson, so not that ludicrous)

thats my point the hypocrisy of the press, and the eagerness of the british public to lap up both the fawning and the muck racking, never fails to astound me. the danish, norwegian and dutch royal families have had scandals in recent years too, all covered in similar fashion by their respective domestic tabloid press. our royal family may be much higher profile globally, but not as unique as we may think. all our constitutional monarchy north sea neighbours (and our royal family's cousins) are very similar, just on a smaller scale.

We are totally agreed on this, although my basic belief is republicanism, i do in many respects feel a little sorry for the royals. The fourth estate in this country is in the main a national disgrace, but unfortunately, someone keeps buying the rags and scandal sheets, that pretend to be newspapers, and although i do have a little sympathy, the royal family need to keep these reptiles onside.
I remember when Diana died, the Mail was insinuating the week before that she was mentally unstable, one fatal car crash later, and she was, Diana, the peoples princess, the tragic, ill used mother of two poor little boys, who would never have thought of marrying that muslim, Dodi Fayed
