A Times article here from 3 Premier League CEOs on why a football regulator is BAD. Some odd comments in here from all parties involved.

It's interesting all of them wanted to be consulted more but we have seen how they have self regulated over the last few years. Surely how they've been is how they want to still be?

Paul Barber wants Brighton & Hove Albion to have all the money it can get and to make the EFL, grassroots football and society to get as little as possible of the money coming into football.

Thats his job and why he doesn't want football to be regulated.

Obviously this benefits Brighton and 19 other big companies at the cost of everyone else, so no one should be inclined to agree with Paul on this just because its the stance of PB & the club. Its a business decision that won't do you any good unless you're a BHAFC shareholder.

Hmmm. I have to say I don’t agree with much of what Barber has said. Why would this regulator be overly bureaucratic and costly? The three key points put to the CEOs is the fit-and-proper test, control over payments to the EFL clubs and parachute payments. Fit-and-proper test is already being done, and the other two are currently decided by the EPL…having a regulator handle these is, in effect, free outsourcing. Struggling to understand Barber’s concerns about this being costly and having make cuts or pass the costs on. Where’s the cost coming from? Odd.

Bloom and Barber normally come across well, but I remember the live meeting with the regulator about a year ago Bloom was a bit flustered and unprepared and Barber was the same as this Times interview i.e. making responses which, at face value, don’t stack up.

I also don’t recall the club highlighting the costs and bureaucracy of FFP? As an additional overhead, this must be significant?

No idea why the club are so against this.

Actually I have but it would go against the common NSC line that we invented how to run football properly. Business owner doesn’t want regulation? Colour me SHOCKED.

Football needs regulation. When clubs are proposing charging pensioners who have followed them for six decades the same as someone at their earning prime who’s only been to the ground twice it’s time to act.

I was under the impression from some posters on here that pensioners are really wealthy, hence not needing luxuries like the WFA?

Agree though, this is just the club serving their own interests.

So why are you not shouting for a regulator of the West End Theatres where top price seats can now be £300 or more with no concessions for pensioners.

I agree. As football fans our first priority should be to level the playing field as much as possible. I would never agree that Albion, or any club, wanting to hold an advantage over others by virtue of their current status is right.

Because that’s total whataboutery and people tend to go to the theatre now and again to see different shows, rather than wanting to see the same show as often as they can because it’s been part of their community since they were born.

You’re comparing apples and sabre toothed tigers.

One other interesting point in this interview is the rail comment. Basically wanting the railways to honour cheap tickets if tv and epl move them at short notice.

That's the tail wagging the dog surely.

Also mention of other expectations on railways to get fans to matches which does have some point

It does make me wonder how much the club co-operated (maybe even instigated) the martin samuel article

The thing we forget nowadays is that it is often pensioners who can afford it the most. Having worked in the charity sector for 25 years, I can tell you that it is pensioners who are the lifeblood. Much of the national wealth is held by them. House ownership, pensions, savings.

When the debate broke about the withdrawal of the winter fuel allowance it occurred to me that many of those who have most trouble with heating bills are young working folk- especially those paying high rents. This is not to belittle pensioners who are struggling, because many are and need help, but the real picture is a lot broader.
