Food at football grounds

At Millwall on Boxing Day we had planned to visit Macdonalds or KFC in the Old Kent Road before the game but got caught up in traffic and only got to the ground with about 15 mins to spare, so had to partake of Millwall catering. I had a pie and chips and a cup of instant tea, my son had a microwaved burger, chips and a carton of Ribena. Cost £14.00.

Had we made it to KFC we could have fed a coach load for £14.00.

Have lunch before you go and dinner when you get home. The most I ever have at Withdean is a bovril on a cold day..

That's what Martin Perry et al want to change at Falmer, all adding to the 'Falmer Experience', and I have absolutely no problem with eating at the ground - it helps the club after all - but only if the quality and price is good enough.

There is an opportunity here which the club should just not miss out on.

Put it this way - I don't know exactly how the catering franchise would work, but if it is set up that the club gets a percentage of all sales from the food outlets at the ground, it would be in the club's interest to sell that franchise to the BEST bidder, not necessarily the HIGHEST. It's a false economy just to grab the cash early when ultimately no-one would take any interest in buying and eating shit. If the first criterion is 'selling to the highest bidder' and the club doesn't get any return on sales (i.e. the money only comes in from selling the franchise), then frankly I would have little or no faith in the food being any good, and they would not get my custom. Ever.

And for a lardy bloke, that threat ought to carry some clout...

Make Knight and Perry eat that crap instead of nipping into the hospitality suite for lunch and sarnies.....

Part of the day especially for kids is a burger or chips .

There's a point there. Hospitality food at Withdean is fairly decent, if a bit steep in price. (The pasties in the downstairs bar are f***ing disgusting beyond recognition though).

It's outdoors in the rain where the catering of the burgers, pies and chips is such a shambolic con.

Martin Perry and co are absolutely right in wanting to get the catering right. One of the major issues with Falmer will be getting people to and away from the stadium, if you offer places where people can get decent food then they are more likely to want to turn up at the ground early, or leave later. This would have the double effect of reducing congestion whilst also bringing in vital revenue. As someone who is an extremely rare visitor to Withdean I would quite happily pay for a sit down lunch, if the food and cost were reasonable, on my visits to Falmer.

Nail on head.

mejona, I take the Yorkie approach to football, eating before going to the game and again when I get home...usually in a pub if it is an away game, before the Walsall game last week I went to Ikea to buy some things for home and to get a bite to eat...I sustain myself during the game with a bar of chocolate.

Taking this a step further, how about if the club were able to have a restaurant in the ground that was open not just on match days but at other times, somewhere that you would be happy to go with either family or friends...dining within sight of the hallowed turf...perhaps NSC should assist with writing a business plan for Falmer.

i'd be suprised if a full time restaurant would survive in that location unless it was something really special

would you really go all the way out to falmer to eat when there's plenty of decent places in town.........well, you may, and many football fans may, but would enough make the trip to support a business?

There are no reasons NOW for serving crap food at ridiculous prices. £ 2 for chips ?

We used to blame Ecovert but now.................

Falmer food will go to the big paying franchisers who will squeeze every penny from the fans. I would love to believe I`m an old misguided cynic but we`ll see....

and as for a decent pint fooooorrrrrrrget it.

St Mary's is pretty good: Sausage and mash for about £2. YUM!

really ? its weird but St Marys as i remember was AWFUL (biting into a half cooked burger with loads of shit in it and trying to wash it down with a massively overpriced 3/4 plastic half cup of gnat piss doesn't exactly warm them to me - especially as it worked out at the best part of 7 notes for the two items and felt poorly of it for days afterwards)

'uddersfield wasn't too bad the other night , BOOTIFUL pies ... *drool*

Is that for when Man Utd are in town?

Good point turi, it would have to be really special to get people out there, I was just chucking the idea into the ring to see what opinions were towards opening that up as another revenue stream.

Dunno why people actually NEED to eat or drink at matches.

It's like cinemas, why do people need popcorn? They don't buy it anywhere else.
