Surrounded by £1.4b of world class players he shines.

Surrounded by overrated plodders he’s average.

Always been the way in football. Only special players such as De Bruyne, Pirlo, Gazza still stand out as geniuses in any company, running games, unplayable. Foden isn’t that level.

Whilst he might be a bit unhinged these days, I still can’t believe you’ve left Le Tissier off that list WS?!

Or Jeff Minton.

I think he’s an exceptionally talented player who is clearly not thriving in Southgate’s boring and completely ineffective football style.

Nailed it.

Having played as a defender, Southgate's natural tendency is to not lose a game rather than try to win it.

Our best crop of attacking midfielders are being wasted under his management.

Tonight, my pal Bob said 'if you could have any player from England's past, at their peak, in the side now, who would it be?'

I shall start a new thread I think.....

(It's Beckham)

Becks couldn’t lace Gazza’s boots.

The last England midfielder who naturally ran games, he had everything, especially pre the ACL and later booze.

Whilst Italy, France, Brazil churn out effortlessly great CM’ers.

Wasn’t bad post ACL either.

Euro 96 etc…. Qualifying campaign for 98

Foden is brilliant for City…… yet to replicate it for England IMO.

Imho if De Bruyne and/or Haaland were out for the season, it’s a disaster for Citeh. Similarly David Silva before that.

Some players just have an aura of always operating on another level to everyone else.

Without Foden they’d cope fine.

I don’t think England have any player like that in any position.

Maybe. But think about all the knots, spittle and tears in those laces. It's a tough ask, and one that would have foxed even the talents of Rosa Elena Egipciaco.

But Becks was inspirational, with a wand of a foot. And I continue to have a massive man-crush on him.

Gaza’s unpredictability ended up his downfall. Have to say that overall Beckham probably did more than Gazza for England.
As far as Southgate is concerned, he has had a good run but is clearly now struggling with modern tactics and their required flexibility. Weird, but maybe not surprising, that we have qualified for the World Cup and Italy haven’t. I don’t hold out much hope for World domination so am looking forward to finding out which poor mug will be next in the firing line.

Reckon Grealish could be.

But City are a team of superstars. With England we just pray for a world class talent, and Gazza apart they rarely turn up.
We want Foden to be, but without elite players the brilliance he displays for City, he can’t replicate for country

Totally with you on Becks Harry. I think he’s always been totally under rated as a player because of the other stuff. One of the most special players we’ve ever produced.

Man U's last manager contrived to make Ronaldo look shit.

Foden is still a kid, and Pep thinks he's great, and for Citeh he is excellent.

The OP is simply being a tit for digging him out. There, I said it

Mings, Coady, Maguire, Stones, Dier, Trippier, Shaw would be a liability for any coach, when up against the very best. Or just Hungary.

IF Potter considered the role, I wondered if he looked at that defence. He wouldn’t be able to sign players from anywhere in the world or spend 200 days a year coaching them.

The England job, as you rightly estimate, would be wrong for G-POTT.

The trick now is to select the right blend for your plan and impact-coach them.

Southgit lacks courage. Picking Slabbers and (on the bech) Shaw was lazy.

As for playing Bukayo Saka out of position, on the wrong wing, that's amateur hour. Just because his club side did it a couple of times for desperate measures....Not since Sven played Johnson on the wing have I seen such tomfoolery.

Foden is an outstanding talent, but I’m baffled at why he always looks so bang average in this England team. I can’t recall him ever having a stand-out game for England

There are many outstanding young English players, some of them unlucky enough to look bang average in the England squad.

Its like buying jimi hendrix guitar and getting gareth southgate to play it through a littlewoods catalogue amp.

To be fair for Potter he could just pick a current/past Brighton backline and be done with it.

Burn Lamptey
Webster Dunk White

Would be a massive improvement over what we have now.

In his prime, Gazza had everything. I remember opposition players trying to tackle him would either bounce off him or be left behind as he spun away or laid off a pass. He could tackle, dribble and pass and finish. If only he had had the help he needed for his mental demons when younger, who knows how good he could have been....Gazza scored 10 goals in 57 appearances for England

Beckham took every corner , free kick and many of our penalties for years yet scored only 17 goals in 115 appearances. He couldn't tackle, dribble or head.

Bit harsh on Beckham. Yes, Gazza was streets ahead but during his era, Beckham led the team. He took every corner and free kick because he was the best at that. His goal record is from out wide, not down the middle. If your comparing records, then Gazza got 10 in 57 which is not dissimilar to Beckham's rate. Point is, neither were in the team for their goals.
