Not at all. Just a basic understanding of economic, political and cultural issues irrespective of political sway. But yes, if you're too stupid you can't vote.

You'd fail

Of course. And their football team is just very lucky? Their cars are just the best of a bad bunch?

Not sure what football has to do with it, neither does thier Olympic performances, or lack of it. They are not some master race. They produce impressive cars but their car industry has benefited massively from their financial engineering, as has their whole manufacturing industry. Its hardly a controversial statement, they have played the Euro very well

The worst car iv'e ever had was a Mercedes, pile of sh1t.
My Toyota and Fords have knocked them into a cocked hat.

I say this partly in jest but is it such a bad idea? Maybe the vote should be earned instead of a birth right? Maybe a simple test where people have to show a reasonable understanding of certain things is the way forward? After all, cars in the hands of unqualified drivers are dangerous. The same can be said of the ballot box.

You really are a cut above us that live here HT, i bet you go down well in the Fatherland. How about adding those that do not live here to your list.....would get my vote.

There will be plenty on here and elsewhere who bemoan the german dominance of europe but buy there cars though. For me their cars are impressive but so are others and there is much better value for money elsewhere

This week - make a wish list of every blissful political thing you can imagine - then in a few weeks you'll be able to tick off every single one that Jezza has promised.

Oh! - I do love this time of year daisy's and lambs and long evenings and nightingales, bluebells and sunbeams and green, green, greenery. Isn't life wonderful and carefree?

Are you saying that people under 25 shouldn't have the right to vote?

You'd fail

People seem to be advocating a return to limited enfranchisement, said in jest but sounds far closer to the perceptions regarding this of 19th century landowners, than the stalwarts of the labour and equality movements they will no doubt claim to admire.

82% to 57% is not "slightly"

well like i said, dress it how you like,it's still high in the extreme, most worrying of all is that the UK (until recently?) and Germany most probably have AAA credit ratings, how would you or i fare with a debt to income ratio of such? probably extremely poor in all probability.

Ps.... thought the figures were more 65% vs 78% but i will accept it's not slightly.

Indeed, selective rigging of the voting system to allow a despot in. Sounds a very German idea.

I see no one standing up for those less fortunate or disabled.
This current government are a social disgrace, one rule for the unfortunate, hoodwink those just about managing, those a bit more well off think the Tories are helping them, all the while the top one percent are getting richer.
#We are all in together

I see no mention of responsibility, I see no mention of work, I see no mention of bettering ones self. None of which mean that I begrudge help for those in genuine need.

I do see jealousy though.

You'd need to pass my test first.

He is saying he would like to set a test to pass to qualify to vote. We would need to have 'a reasonable understanding of certain things.' I would imagine I wouldn't pass as I wouldn't have the correct understanding of the EU.
I've seen this proposal for a test to determine 'right thinking' and 'intelligence' (as determined by the proposer) several times on NSC. It's a bit..well.. fascist.

Despite being a flag bearer on the streets in Brighton St Georges day parade in 1985 for a Scout group,i'd fail the test as simply forgot/did not realize today was St Georges day...

For that reason i cannot vote..

"Partly in jest". I've heard it all now, a self-proclaimed socialist who wants to remove the universal suffrage that took centuries to win with the obvious effect that those worst-off and in the poorest areas will make make up the vast majority of this new underclass. Maybe bring in eugenics too because the lower classes do breed like flies and a lot of them don't contribute much to society. Just keep enough so that we've all got part-time cleaners and someone to collect the rubbish every fortnight. That's straight out of 1984. A lumpenproletariat fed with booze, cheap music and the lottery and not to trouble their tiny little minds with decisions about who they want running their country.

Jesus wept, the utter arrogance of someone who thinks that their vote is more important than another person who isn't as clever as them and that the least educated should lose their rights all together. The disbelief that a socialist believes that this is worth considering.

Out of interest, what significant regressive taxes have the tories introduced recently? purchase tax, perhaps the worst regressive tax snd the pre cursor for vat, was introduced in 1940, i would be interested in removing that over time

Cameron's govt raised VAT within months of getting in - Let's be perfectly honest here, you know and I know that Tory values, Tory fiscal policies favour the better off, that's what they're about....
