Interesting that the Tories failed to take Crawley, when they only needed to win 1 seat.

In fact, Labour increased their majority to 2

The Tories would do well to note the abject failure of their pernicious campaign in the London mayoral election. They should probably ask Lynton Crosby for a refund as well, as much as he got the mood of the GE right, he got the mood of this one disastrously wrong.

Illustrates the difference between London and most of the rest of England. There's a none-too-dissimilar difference between Brighton and the rest of Sussex.

As for Scotland, why is Labour bothered? A lot of the party's supporters have defected to the SNP and are no doubt today celebrating the election of a socialist government at Holyrood.
Because they want a socialist government in England too and without the Scottish votes it's likely that England will permanently return a Tory government. I'd say that's quite bothersome.

It looks like Khan is going to be mayor. Apparently Goldsmith's vote collapsed even in strong Tory areas. I can't say I'm surprised as ROSM says he ran a very bad campaign and didn't deserve it. It will be interesting to see how Khan positions himself in the Labour Party after this. He's had a few skeletons in his closet regarding friendships with some unsavoury characters but appears genuine in trying to put that behind him.

John Rentoul made a very astute comment that it could be a double-edged sword for Corbyn. If he follows Boris Johnson's example being Mayor gives Khan power outside the confines of the normal party apparatus and so can go off message with his own agenda. It's also a great place to build his own power base. I suspect and hope that Khan will try to build bridges with the Jewish community quickly and will also be seen to come down harder on the rotten boroughs of Tower Hamlets et al. If he is an effective mayor then it can only be good for British politics that there's a spread of political views in positions of power. The London Mayor is a very big gig, Boris made himself a nuisance to the Government, let's hope Khan does the same.

I wish the SNP could migrate south. Devolution apart, the nearest thing to the brand of socialist politics that I grew up with. :(

Just how socialist are they though? They have had the power, for nearly 20 years to raise income tax by up to 3p in the pound. They also have powers to raise business taxes but they've never done so and will never do so. If they were genuine in their convictions that Scottish people would accept rises in tax for better services they'd implement the rises but they don't want the responsibility, they want to act like a perennial party in opposition. The SNP are cowards.

I agree with that. Not sure he was 'friends' with anyone unsavoury, though. In his day job he attended a few debates where there were a few nut jobs also on the panel. If that were a hanging offence nobody would agree to appear on Question Time. No, that was all part of the Crosby smear mix. Evidently folk saw through that . . . . Khan sounds like your typical cosmopolitan Londoner, not waving his religion or whatever about. Just like two of my line managers - one a Jew and the other a Muslim; not in 20 years have the antecedents ever been relevant. And he has already demonstrated his distance from Jezza. It will be nice to have a London mayor who has a bit of humility, and who isn't using the job as a stepping stone for 'greater things', for a change. And . . . exhale. :bigwave::lolol:

Yeah, perhaps I should have put the word friendship in commas. I'm thinking about his local Imam in particular but you're right that he can't vet everyone for every statement uttered. I don't know an awful lot about Khan but from what I read he does appear humble and in it for the right reasons and I like how he hasn't shied away from this anti-semitism row. He's acknowledged it and said what he wants to do to tackle it. Bish bosh - a straight answer and an attempt at fixing it. Ken Livingstone take note.

where and when did you grow up where socialism was blaming a neighbouring government for anything negative, while taking extra tax revenue from them?

They only won it last time by a perfect storm of situations including insufficient candidates in some areas. The system is designed to prevent an overall majority - unlike FPTP that gives you one on 37%!
