Must be something about the West Midlands. Mine was Birmingham City 1989. we won 2-1. Three of us (very young and stupid) decided to walk back to the station afterwards and one (not me) had a replica shirt on). All ok till we got in the town centre and saw a big group of lads outside McDonalds. One of them lamped the bloke in the shirt straight away and the others surrounded him. We stopped and were clocked by those on the edge of their group.

Fortunately a bloke got off a bus who was obviously another City "Face" and told the attackers how scummy they were picking on a single bloke in colours and they left him but not before the me and the third bloke had a couple of slaps and then we all got chased back through the shopping centre to New St.

Like you say, very brave, a good twenty plus lads onto three 17 year olds.

My friend was stabbed on Hove Station after the Charlton League Cup match in August 1973 when the Charlton mob came on to the South platform as we were going back to Worthing , he got on to the track to escape over to the North side and was stabbed by a Brighton ' fan' an inch from his heart , rushed to Hospital and his release some days later and photo was featured in the Argus . He had to stand with the police at the next home match to try and identify the person but to no avail. I keep meaning to look up the incident in the Argus archives. Never personally been hit but friends have at Portsmouth and Millwall away in 1972 plus numerous close calls in the 70's including Pompey friendly at home , Bristol Rovers away at Eastville , Spurs , Sunderland ,, Swindon 72 , and many others .

Was that the game where a handful of Lincoln fans decided to be in the front row of the away end and then celebrate when they scored? Let’s say they got a fairly good kick-in from a fair few of our fans after that and were then escorted out.

Was that also the game (I was there but forget which year) where our fans ignored the game completely and chanted continuously towards the directors box where presumably one of the evil gang must have been sitting? (I think we lost 2-0)

Yes remember that as well. They did get the guy who did it, as he hid his knife in his toilet system. I remember 'Dave' just asked after being stabbed 'has anyone got a plaster' maybe a indication of his future career and we leave it just there.

Swindon away for me, when we lost 4 - 0 and the ref abandoned it with about 10
Mins to go. We were walking back to station when a little kid in a parka came up and hit me in the face, he looked like he belonged in a kids library, and it did not really hurt, made me laugh more than pain.

As like Rocker959, close a few times, probably with you matey most of those incidents and the Millwall game in the 70's deserves a thread of its own, how we survived that day, no idea.

In answer to the OP's question, never at the football. A couple of times in the wider world I had run ins with teds, and was once assaulted (from behind) by a bone head who ran away after punching me. Oddly, as a punk rocker in the late 70s, football types kept their distance, even though I was only nine and a half stone of wet piss. I remember going down to the Dell to watch the Albion and me and my mate (eight and a half stone of wet piss) moved around without any interference. The hypnotic power of a bit of eye liner, mad hair and a look of disdain, perhaps.

A mate of mine was clubbed by a Scunthorpe fan outside the North Stand. I chased the bloke and a few others up the Old Shoreham Road. They ran like rabbits. I cornered the bloke and chased him back down again. He hid behind some policeman who threatened to arrest me if I persisted in my remonstrations.

They were more concerned about the number of Albion fans they pulled in rather than dealing with a serious assault by the bloke cowering right behind them.

I'm sure PPF would have sorted it better.

Yep, remember it well. They all walked up towards the North Stand after the game looking for trouble and picked on the youngest. smallest looking one of us. Then they hid behind Beardo and his mates who did nothing. Another group carried on looking for trouble down Fonthill Rd. A few more skirmishes and I don't think they "won" a single one of them.

Derby away in the play-offs.

Me and a few mates had booked a hotel for the night. We’d been on the piss all day, and went back out on it after the game. At some point late in the evening we stumbled in to a Burger King and got chatting to a bunch of kids a few years younger than us in the queue. They were all Derby fans and it was quite a polite conversation apart from with one of their group who was probably 16/17 years old, 5’8 and 20 stone. He was just a mouthy c*nt for no real reason.

Anyway whilst waiting for our food I went for a quick piss. My order was going to take longer so I wasn’t in a rush and when I came back my mates were being ushered outside by security along with the Derby fans. I finished waiting for my food and then wandered out to meet up with my mates, only to find out they’d been moved on by the police.

I turned to ask my new Derby pals if they knew where my mates had been sent off too, the larger teenager told me to f*ck off so I shrugged and went to say bye to his friends... To which the fat chode decided to tw*t me one. I stood there, mozzarella dippers in one hand, absolutely gobsmacked. Then I came to my senses , planted one on him and hot footed out of there to enjoy the rest of my night.
