I had no idea what was going on throughout but was only watching for Hugh Grant who is spectacular in this. I mean, sublime.

Plus I rather like Aubrey Plaza.

Judging by the title format, this is an attempt to kick start a franchise. It’s unlikely.

Turned out great hasn’t he. Best thing in The Gentlemen.

Ritchie’s one trick pony bolted many years ago, turned up dead and he’s still trying to flog it but he can still put together a decent cast.

Ashamed to say I haven't even looked at the Duke Of Yorks listings since the pandemic. My bad. My very very bad. Used to love nothing more than a DOY matinee, then emerging blinking into the light at 2pm

Talking of The Duke of Yorks and 2 o'clock, the 2am version after a late night double header was a delight...Assault on Precinct 13/The Thing particularly memorable ( the testing the blood scene in The Thing better than an alarm clock for a drifting off to sleep teen )

I'm currently having a coffee while waiting for How To Blow Up A Pipeline.

Rather looking forward to this, my film guy rated it as one of hif favourite films of the year so far, which is good enough for me so I've not investigated further.

Will report back later.



There's the possibility this is my first film since COVID, not in a 'never going back' just an out of the habit stylee.

I watched a Thai film last night on NetFlix, “Hungry” (2023) which was eerily similar to “The Menu”.

A talented young chef in a working class family diner is good at cooking. A mysterious man shows up and gives her a posh business card. She is aspirational and wants to be “special” (ie wealthy). She is introduced to Chef Paul, an intimidating celebrity chef in his luxury restaurant. She begins working there then… not a lot happens.

The story is incredible simple, yet the movie still doesn’t know what it’s trying to be. Is it a coming of age story, a crime thriller, a critique of fine dining, a social commentary piece… it’s a bit all over the place.

The pacing is deathly slow, then the movie just stops. It doesn’t end, it stops.

The “themes” all get hammered around the audience’s head to the point of parody. Yes, rich cryptobros do cocaine. We get it. None of it contributed in any way to creating any sense of empathy or growth in the characters.

Some very dodgy dubbing going on too in the English dub. A very elderly rich businessman sounded in like a cartoon rabbit in his late 20’s. Weird stuff.

A pretty messy, pointless film.

It's not for everyone, but if you can manage a day without The Telegraph or saying something derogatory about Greta T, this is for you.

The score and landscape give it Hell And High Water vibe, only made by the black sheep, disowned, youngest child, of the family.

I also watched this south london set romcom. Two mutual friends of an artist meet at his latest exhibit and start to bond over their recent break ups and try to help each other get over said relationships.

Seemed quite fresh and youthful. Lots of reviews seem to be noting it as a love letter to south london and you can see why, a lot of shots of everyday life around london as the leads meander around various locales, sharing their stories and connecting.

Cute, funny, and a delight cameo that you probably wouldn't expect, that leads to a visual gag/easter egg later on that greatly amused me

My film of 2023 so far...could have spent another 90 minutes with the two of them...and yes I saw the bit post credits.

Alien Day tomorrow, so I'll be watching the Directors cut of Aliens on the big screen for the first time. Cannot wait.

Aliens has the best "build up" of tension, from the start to the first onscreen Alien kill, of any film made, imho.

The Director's Cut of it is SO so good... that and the first film are on my all time top ten films (I see them as such different entities). If it wasn't for the footie I'd definitely be at the cinema this evening (even with Newt's piercing scream which gets on my nerves, but the DC does make it much clearer just why Ripley cares so much about the girl).

2 weeks ago The Rewatchables pod (yeah I know sorry, but not sorry) did Alien.
As always worth a listen.


(FYI I'm halfway through this week's pod, Sudden Death, as always the schlockier the film, the funnier the pod)

The Director's Cut of it is SO so good... that and the first film are on my all time top ten films (I see them as such different entities). If it wasn't for the footie I'd definitely be at the cinema this evening (even with Newt's piercing scream which gets on my nerves, but the DC does make it much clearer just why Ripley cares so much about the girl).

Aye, had to make a decision. But I've never had the chance to see Aliens on a big screen before. I was on the Aliens FB fanpage but got banned because I took umbridge and criticised some gun porn posts (someone in Missouri posted a AR-15 mag they'd added an Aliens logo on, saying look at this how cool). Apparently, political posts not allowed but glorifying a mass shooter weapon on a film board dedicated to a fictional, make believe movie is ok.
Anyways, after the movie I shall go home to watch MOTD blind.
Agree about Newt's annoying scream, actually think that whole scene wasn't needed. Director's cut does improve greatly on the theatrical though.
