Passengers - was good to a point, but a little predictable.

Rogue One - Stars Wars innit. Fab! What else to say?

Assassin's Creed - had loads of action but I didn't have a clue what was going on. Maybe I should have played the game first?

Fantastic Beasts - not a Harry Potter fan, so again, a decent film but I clearly missed some of the HP references.

Arrival - confusing

Nocturnal Animals - quite good until the crap ending

The Accountant - not what I was expecting but enjoyed it.

Dr Strange - corny

Inferno - great - Tom Hanks can do no wrong.

The Girl on the Train - pretty good if a bit pedestrian (see what I did there?)

Jack Reacher - never read the books so I enjoyed it. Tom Cruise, another one who can do no wrong!

Bridget Jones - I was there under sufferance and will never admit that I enjoyed it.

Going to see Live by Night tonight.

I fancy Live By Night. A quick review would be most appreciated.

Usually the combination of a musical, Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone would be enough for me run screaming into the night. Therefore, I wasn't really looking forward to watching La La Land with Mrs Fantana. Boy was I wrong - what a film. A total breath of fresh air - beautifully written, wonderfully shot, great original score and a whole range of emotions on display. Without spoiling it for those who haven't seen it yet, it has one of the most poignant and meaningful endings of any film I've watched over the past few years.

Granted it won't appeal to everyone, but I absolutely loved it.

First time I've posted on a NSC film thread, but I saw Moonlight last night, and it's right up there with my favourite films of all time. It's a semi-autobiographical survey of the director or producer, looking at three moments in his life. All of it is immersive, but the first phase and the relationship he strikes up with the local drug-lord is just beautiful, as is the cinematography. It's also got Naomi Harris in it, which works for me.

I fancy Live By Night. A quick review would be most appreciated.

Well I enjoyed it. If you like Boardwalk Empire, Goodfellas etc then it's very much that style. I struggled to hear some of the dialogue at times but maybe the accents didn't help. The film doesn't bring anything new to the genre but there are some decent performances and a couple of funny moments alongside the violent action. There is a head scratching moment near the end which you will know when it happens but overall a good film that will warrant a second watch soon.

As I said if you like prohibition era stories then you will like this, but it won't win any Oscars.

For me it was but each to their own. The problem it now has is it may become a victim of it's own success and people may have unrealistic expectations. I have seen it 3 times and will always regard it as one of the very best films I have seen in my lifetime. It just struck a chord in my heart and soul like no other film has done for many many years

I thought that, considering how they handled the ending (which I personally enjoyed), it was actually very grounded in reality conceptually, which is why it struck such a cord with me. We all have a Mia or a Sebastian in our life, depending on which way you're inclined.

Yes, we all have, I am sure a Mia from the past we think about, what if's. It was a brave ending without giving anything away. Just topped off a wonderful 2 and a bit hours

Strange how people see the same film and have different views. I had no problems hearing the film but I don't recall any funny moments.

A good film if you like gangster stories. Ben Affleck dominates the film and is in virtually every scene, but then he did also write the screenplay and direct the film. The film passed my test of whether it is a good or poor film, as I never looked at my watch to see how long was left.

Went to see Manchester by the Sea again yesterday. A really really good film. The subject matter is of course a joyless one, but the humanity in the drama is touching and gripping. I was thinking of Five Easy Pieces and Being There whilst watching, those 70s greats, and a bit of The Descendants from a few years ago in the lighter moments. The acting is great, although I find the actor of the Affleck brothers, Casey, does a still-faced brooding very well, but little else. It's his forte, so fine. A couple of lines from it agonisingly stick with, and one scene almost had me blubbing. Such a good drama, edited beautifully and cohesively. Just great.

La La Land

Quite simply the best film I have seen in the last 5 years. It is an absolute delight from start to finish. As near to perfect a film it is possible to be

A homage to the Hollywood musical greats and a brilliant addition to a forgotten genre

So many memorable scenes and a wonderful score I do not know where to start

Brilliant acting and a great script and story

Oscars will be showered on this film if there is any justice

It is firmly in my top 10 films of all time

I will be amazed if there is a better film than this in 2017

Just been to see it, loved it! Such a brilliant feel good film, amazing ending. Both leads have some serious talent too.

Went to see Manchester by the Sea again yesterday. A really good film. The subject matter is of course a joyless one, but the humanity in the drama is touching and gripping. I was thinking of Five Easy Pieces and Being There whilst watching, those 70s greats, and a bit of The Descendants from a few years ago in the lighter moments. The acting is great, although I find the actor of the Affleck brothers, Casey, does a still-faced brooding very well, but little else. It's his forte, so fine. A couple of lines from it agonisingly stick with, and one scene almost had me blubbing. Such a good drama, edited beautifully and cohesively. Just great.

A beautiful film, the craft that has gone into its making is to be admired and appreciated. It's not really a film to enjoy as such, musing as it does on the human condition but its beautifully made and acted. The only thing that grated for me was the music - the individual pieces were all superb in their differing ways but I just found the music very intrusive and dominant at times, and this in a film which was full of soft touches and subtlety.

I thought it was excellent, I must say. I found Affleck showed a range of emotion that his brother has barely touched on over the years. Like you say however, I didn't enjoy it per se, rather I found pleasure in the realness of the drama and the acting that pushed the story along.

Also saw Jackie - Portman is excellent, albeit her voice is grating at times, but I didn't enjoy the actual film all that much. Her motivations chopped and changed with little evidence or reason behind why, and the story just didn't captivate me all that much. I'd be interested to hear others' views.

I was just to write of Jackie. I'm very much with you in that Portman was for the most part excellent, yet didn't make the character likeable at all, and it made me wonder of Portman's intent. Bits of it were very good, and there were elements of the chaos in amongst the trauma of such graphic and personal loss - what could and would she be now, or what could a woman be in those days of male-led inequality, how can she build on the myth of her husband's greatness, in part as I am sure we would all do when someone so close has gone, but also to her own sense of public identity - but whichever messages it was trying to release weren't clearly painted. I liked her in interview mode, of how in control she was whilst the remorse seemed to have begun to drift away a tad. The music was a bit much toward the end too. Was alright, but could have been more interestingly told. And without Greta Gerwig, whose hipster-face is even less changeable than Actorfleck.

Films I have seen so far this year.

Manchester by the Sea - Incredible, gripping, heart wrenching acting. Thoroughly enjoyed it as it was a whirlwind of emotions, however, it was a bit long and dragged a little bit in places and I walked out thinking wow that was a tour de force but peppered slightly with a nothing really happened... 8/10

Rogue One - Better than last years star wars in my opinion, very action packed. Would definitely recommend a watch. 8/10

Jackie - Incredible acting by Natalie Portman, Peter Sarsgaard was not convincing as Bobby in my opinion and poorly cast. Natalie Portmans voice got on my tits a bit but really bought in to her emotion and turmoil. I think the film slightly missed the mark but Natalie did not. 7/10

The Hand Maiden (Park Chan-wook) - I know this came out in the summer but I did not see it until last week. Park Chan-wook is an incredible director and once again has hit the nail on the head.Set in Japan occupied Korea during the war this VERY raunchy film and could be argued that it is a Soft Core Lesbian Porn film, however it is extremely gripping and a fantastic adaption of The Fingersmith novel. 9/10

Hoping to see Moonlight this weekend, I have very high hopes for it.

Park Chan-wook is an incredible director and once again has hit the nail on the head.Set in Japan occupied Korea during the war this VERY raunchy film and could be argued that it is a Soft Core Lesbian Porn film, however it is extremely gripping and a fantastic adaption of The Fingersmith novel. 9/10
