Precinct 9: Very entertaining I thought. An interesting use of Aliens. Definitely worth a watch if you've got a couple of hours free. 7.8
Avatar: Nothing to add to what's already been said. Visually excellent, story a bit shit. Is it meant to be a kids film? A good half hour too long aswell. 7.0

A Single Man
I thought this was a really good film. Colin Firth gave a fantastic performance. Nicholas Hoult was very good (I thought he was weird in About a Boy and an obnoxious cock in skins, but found him bearable, even likeable, in this).

The Crazies
I quite liked this. It wasn't too action-packed, and it didn't try to out gross zombie films. On the whole there wasn't much gore. It was a low key sort of thing. I like Timothy Olyphant more evrytime I see him. Rhada Mitchell was m'eh, danielle panabaker wasn't really involved enough to warrant getting someone even of her level of fame. The other main character was played by joe anderson who was in the great beatles music film 'across the universe'. He was decent, tried to give his character some depth.
I remember really enjoying it at the time, though looking back I can't help but wonder if there was as decent a character development/story as I remember.

M'eh. The trailers gave me the impression that early in the film a senator type would try to frame matt damon and he'd have to go on the run to save himself and find the truth.Wasn't quite like that. It's debateable if he ever really defied any direct orders (he agrees to help the cia, they sign some papers, send him on a mission, then moments after he leaves, he's told his transfer to the cia division is revoked, and that's never really addressed as an issue). It was a decent action film, I guess, but not on the level of bourne in my opinion. Damon plays the chief of a battalion of soldiers who are searching for wmds in iraq during the war. This was kinda a flaw because we know none are found, and the when he realises this (don't worry, that's not the "twist" of the movie, I haven't spoiled anything) it's hard to take it as a revelation.
Alice in Wonderland 3D
I almost didn't see this, but I came out from green zone just as another showing started, so I went in. It was a decent Tim Burton film, not one of his best. Johnny Depp was doing his quirky character and it didn't feel like he was pushing himself. Anne Hathaway seemed to be trying too hard to be burtonesque, Helena Bonham carter was decent enough, but like Depp didn't seem to be putting too much effort in. The girl who played Alice was very m'eh. She seemed to lack something. Overall it was ok though. It was completely pointless making it 3d.
I was going to swear off 3d films, but I know I won't stick to that. I'm already thinking Clash of the Titans might make better use of 3D...

2012: One of those ridiculous disaster movies. Lots of explosions, buildings collapsing, roads disappearing, tidal waves, people dying, humane presidents, evil(ish) underlings, battles of conscience and poor humour. Still, surprisingly entertaining for what should be total cack and the time (2.5hours) went by pretty quickly. 6.7

Even though it's a big book I'd say two suppers and a light lunch at best.

Shutter Island.
Big, bold and bleak in look and feel but a fun ride. Think Hitchcock and maybe Cape Fear. Di Caprio is great and Ben Kingsley gives his usual menacing performance. In the end it's a little silly but I had a lot of fun getting there. You leaving feeling like you've been scraping the walls of a dank and dark mad house - but in a good way.

It stays pretty close to the book with only a few shortcuts, one change (which works well) and the tiniest little bit of plot from the second book.
V good adaptation. It is though an 18 certificate for a reason. This is no DaVinci Code.

I saw Greenzone the other day. I liked the Bournes in general with the underlying politics of it and the shaky-camera stuff which has you physically rattled within the action, but this reteaming of Paul Greengrass and Matt Damon was something of a damp squib. As i am sure you all know, this is a drama in Iraq relating to the search for the weapons of mass destruction and one soldier determined to disobey orders and find out the truth. M brother is a fan of the book it is based on and, apparently, that concentrates mostly on the gross opulence taken on by the invading forces and how quickly the possible cause of war is forgotten when money gets directly involved. In the film, there's about 30 seconds of that when Damon meets his CIA insider in Saddam's palatial home which is now full of Americans who look like they're on a richboy springbreak, lounging in pools and drinking champers with chicks and listening to Snoop Dogg. Shame they didn't go into more detail over this as it would have been a more battering revelation than the likelihood that there were no WMDs. Gee willakers, i had no idea.
The action was largely uninteresting. Possibly because i obviously knew the outcome, but also because no matter how much you oscillate a perspective, there has to be something slightly realistic beneath for it to seem true. Sadly, the corny dialogue of the whole piece made it difficult to believe. It got repeatedly "you can't handle the truth!"y, and the characters seemed rather stupid as we're way ahead of them, which we should never really be outside of soap operas or some horror films. The Iraqi mainguy in the film, who is given the name "Fredi" so we can relate to him, is an unprofound cinematic stereotype and sometimes squirmy.
Damon gave it his all, but that's not an enormous amount. He seems like a nice guy and he cares about what he does, but there really is no range to him that i've seen.
Greengrass wants to decentralise himself, i think, and do more things like United 93, which sought to give a rendition of something we're horrified to watch, but feel we must. This has no subtelty and shouted the obvious truths everwhere.

Obviously unhappy he was stuck in a role and just had to hope others made films of Iraq and that they'd need political leaders or generals involved. He and his moustache are undetachable.
I'd give it a miss, overall. It was a bit boring.

i thought it was riveting and quite emotional. a pretty standard murder thriller to be honest but the acting was superb and it has enough quirks and fresh ideas to carry it. i'm not a great fan of explicit and drawn out scenes of abuse, it was too voyeuristic at times (great films can do more by implication of violence, a la Texas Chainsaw) so i'd mark it down for that.
not for the faint hearted but still highly recommended.
if you're interested in seeing it please support the Duke of Yorks rather than the Marina.

Oddly, I found the scenes of her dealing with the aftermath of the abuse to be more unsettling than the scenes of abuse.

I didn't like the music (it is very overly dramatic, like 60s thriller - heavily ominous music playing while the car just arrives at the institute), but at the same time there was so much about the film that felt 60s noirish, a if the film was meant to be shot in the style (right down to inconsistencies when cutting the scene together).
Overall it just didn't seem to click for me. It felt like one of those intellectual jokes that you're sure you'd find funny if you understood it, but because you can't it just seems a little flat.

Not sure if you've read the books but there is a very strong thread of sexual abuse running through it. Think they handled it very well. If they had got rid of it, it could easily have turned into something akin to Angels and Demons which was dire.
