The asassination of Jesse James By the coward Robert Ford;
enjoyed this although it dragged a bit at times. Visually it is atmospehric and stunning. Casey Affleck is brilliant as Robert Ford, pitching his performance perfectly. Bradley Pitts is in turns dislikable and charismatic. The documentary on Jesse James in the extras does a good job of explaining why he lived his life as an outlaw.
Definately worth a viewing.

Made in 1981 but not released until last year.
It never received a formal theatrical release and was only seen on late-night cable, poor-quality bootlegs, or on rare occasions at film festivals. Yet somehow this 1981 film about a trio of misfit teenage girls who start a punk band went on to inspire a generation of female rockers.
As this film stars my favourite actor of all time Ray Winstone and appearances from Steve Jones & Paul Cook (Sex Pistols) and has a load of punk girls in.
There was never a chance I was not going to like this film.
I enjoyed every minute.

I went to about 12 films in the London Film Festival over the last couple of weeks. I thought none of them would be rubbish, all of them hand-picked and sold as wondrous new works, but i was proven wrong by The Informant starring Matt Damon and handled by that watery packet of shite Soderbergh. I thought i might be cheered up afterwards by Mike Judge's new comedy of the working classes. Really rather unfunny though, and i relearnt that i just don't like Jason Batemen. Probably have a Teenwolf 2 memory antagonistically lurking in me.
Pick of the bunch was The Road, which couldn't do what the novel did, but gave it a good try. Balibo was alright. Passenger Side tickled me at times, especially with a masturbating transsexual climbing into the lead's car uninvited and still asking for $20 to have watched when he finishes himself off. I watched a film called The Milk of Sorrow too, a gruelling couple of hours of Peruvian mythology relating to the misery passed from mother to daughter after being raped horrendously years ago. The daughter, in her late 20s, can't speak to men and fights the chances of being raped like her now-dead mother was by having a potato up her flange. I giggled a bit at first, but then got a bit more hooked.
The big hits of the festival i tended to miss, but it was a good couple of weeks of afternoons off work and wondering around central London to see some grim world cinema.

Death Proof
Tarantino effort made in a B move sytle from the 70's Tarnatino appears in it as the obligatory Nerd and the writing and dialogue are classic Tarantino. It is borrowed heavily from the concept of Spielberg's Duel, Tarantino admitted as much and it has some great action but it gets a bit too silly at the end. Not a bad view overall.

Computer animation about the creatures made by a scientist designed to do something after the machines kill all humanity.
Great visuals, both in quality of animation and in terms of cinematography, drags a bit in the middle but generally a decent, mature animation.

How To Rob a Bank.
Very good. It features a cameo from Keith Carradine, probably one of his last appearances.
Basically guy is pissed off cos the cashpoint won't give him his last 20 Dollars so goes into the branch to get it rather than pay the 1.50 fee from the cashpoint, the bank is being robbed & he ends up in the vault with a pretty hot girl who is part of the gang.
Without giving too much away, they get stuck in the vault.
Would work very well as a play too but this is a pretty cool film all in all & also features Gavin Rossdale ( Mr Gwen Stefani ) as the leader of the robbers.
Recommended.

The Departed
A superbly constructed crime thriller directed by Scorcese with a brilliant cast. Di Caprio is particularly good as he always is. Anyone who thinks he cannot act is a fool frankly.

An Education - recommended by a female friend as a "coming of age" drama so i had very low expectations!
however..... i really enjoyed it, mainly as the script was sharp and very funny (thanks to Nick Hornby) and also very british. the main actress was outstanding (as were the supporting actors) and a right sexy minx to boot, although that makes me feel bad as she looked more like 14 than the 16/17 year old character she was meant to be playing
a surprise find and worth catching at the Dukes, if you're a fan of Nick Hornby/British films in particular.

I loved everything about this. An animation style, whilst not being unique or groundbreaking, it is not the same as the glut of CG cartoon, and was done very well, even to the tiniest detail such as fur bristling when Ash gets angry. The film itself seemed like it would appeal more to adults, though it is suitable for kids. (Every possible swear word is replaced with "cuss" such as "woah, that is a mindcuss" "shut the cuss up!" etc. Cracked me up every time. I loved it all. Even the bizarre Jarvis Cocker cameo.

And the award for most pointless use of 3D goes to...
I liked this film. Not as much as some people in this thread, but still enjoyed it. But there was no need for it to be in 3D, I can't think of any scene that would look out of place without it. I'm also a little bitter because, as an unlimited card holder I don't like having to pay extra, and with the new policy of selling the 3D glasses separately had me excited that since I re-use mine I wouldn't have to pay the £1.50 extra. Instead I had to pay £1.30. Yup, the glasses saved me 20p. Sigh.
Hopefully will catch up with some other films later this week.

Milk - great performance by Sean Penn but I expected a bit more from the film.
The Damned United - now this I had been looking forward to. Michael Sheen did a fine job in portraying Clough and I also thought Revie was well done but Timothy Spall was just too far away from Peter Taylor.
I enjoyed the scene when Clough first took Leeds for training but the actor playing Billy Bremner didn't exactly have a footballer's physique!
The book was far more rewarding.

Very behind on the movie front so will only offer two rather old DVD's this time.
Quantum of Solace.
I did'nt watch this when it came out because I had heard such tepid reviews so picked it up when the price dropped at Tesco.
What the hell was I thinking? I have never enjoyed a Bond film as much as I did this. Daniel Craig once again portrays 007 as the cold calculating assassin that Fleming intended, the ultra secret Quantum organisation offers exactly the sort of Illuminati style New World Order foil for Bond that the franchise has desperately needed all along and the sheer athleticism of the fight scenes and rooftop chases were truly gripping.
I honestly think that this film is by far and away the finest work to date in this long running series.

Another DVD. Based on the Kevin Samson novel "Outlaws" this is a little cracker of a Brit flick that got no press on release that I saw. It follows a gang of scouse villains of the old school, nicking from articulated trucks out of the Liverpool docks filled with goodies, often at gunpoint, and selling the proceeds via their Network.
The film follows two Brothers Ged (Scot Williams) and John Paul (Kenny Doughty) and focusses on their disagreements on how the hole left after the slaying of the local drug baron (Fat Leo) should be filled. The Gangs leader (Ged) wants to steer well clear of Class A's but John Paul wants to move up in the world.
The interplay between the crew, the fueding Brothers, and the other up and coming gangs such as the Serbs is well observed and Steven Graham turns in another excellent performance as the sinister "Franny" hell bent on revenge for fat Leo. Plenty of nasty stuff to be had here.
Violent and disturbing with an excellent cast this is worth a few quid of anyones money.

Q of S was ok, not sure I'd rate it as highly as you have - I much preferred Casino Royale. Add the fact that Q of S has probably the WORST Bond theme of all time and thats got to drop it down another notch or two as well, surely.

Took me a while to get round to watching this. Whilst it was a good old American backslapping exercise and a story of triumph in the face of adversity, it was still enjoyable.
Cuba Gooding Jr is a very likeable fellow and despite a predictable script and outcomes, it was an enjoyable two hours.

Agreed the theme was not the best but I enjoyed QoS far more than Casino Royale...something just got right to me I suppose.
Its the only 007 that I have actually watched twice within a few days...thats a new one for me.

I brought this for £ 5 second hand and want my money back.
It is HUGELY over rated. It looks good and the cinematography is good and Daniel Day Lewis is a fine actor but the story never went anywhere and the whole 160 minutes rambled along with no purpose or direction and the ending is frankly ridiculous and a piss take.
I like the directors films and love Magnolia but on thinking about TWBB today the movie reeked. It is one of the most over rated films of all time imo and takes over the mantle of most over rates film in the last year from Slum Dog Millionaire.

I have maintained several times on here Quantum of Solace is hugely and bizarrely under rated. I went to the cinema expecting a pile of poop and I got a superbly crafted, well acted, exciting , action packed Bond film. One of the very best in the whole catelogue imo and superior to Casino Royale which in itself was good.
