Just back from Avatar and really not sure how to grade it. Stunning effects and the final battle scene is epic. However, it has some corny american lines in it (yawn) and is at least 40mins- 1hr too long.

I am actually getting really fed up of Americans monopolising the film industry because they have a knack of f***ing nearly everything up.

I loved Avatar. One of the best films I've seen in years.

Hither (sometimes Thither)
Surely the perfect new graphic, like the perfect referee, is one we fail to notice rather than one we stare at for 2 or so hours. Cameron wants his new shade of biege noticed and for everyone to copy from now on. Hopefully soon he'll look to something with a story inside and hope his little trick goes unseen, telling himself serenely that pride isn't put together by the loudness of applause at corporate marketing meetings or Schwarzenegger Appreciation Society dinners.

I got a Claude Chabrol boxset at crimbomas. Watched two thus far and am rather impressed. Le Boucher was the finer and nicely unsettling throughout.

I watched the Hurt Locker last night. Pretty good, though I wasn't overly impressed at the critics seem to be with it. Probably worth a 7. Got Sin Nombre coming this weekend, well excited about that.

Just watched Kite Runner this evening on my parents recommendation of both the book and the film and bloody excellent it was too! With settings and sad storylines similar to Slumdog there's obvious comparisons but for me this a lot better a film.

A few I have witnessed recently:

Mesrine Pt2: Not as exciting as the first part but a great watch nonetheless, really recommend these films though rent them both at the same time as when you have seen the first you will want to see the second straight away. 7.5

Gone Baby Gone: A private detective and his Mrs take on the case of a missing child from Brroklyn, feared abducted, when the family realise that having grown up in Brroklyn, the detective (Casey Affleck, great in this role) has access to folks that won't speak to the police. A riveting little film that uncovers a conspiracy involving The Police, gangland and the locals. Directed well by box headed Jock, Ben Affleck. 6.5

City Rats: Danny Dyer and Tamir Hassan try to break free of their shouty, cockney personas in this depressing, badly paced drama that makes you feel dirty. The story spans a man looking for his old partner in crime and Tamar Hassan dropping water melons off an office block roof mixed in with a big sweaty man having cowboy sex with a blonde Irish hooker. Some terrible acting from some of the leads and support don't help this film's case at all. Do not attempt to view with a hangover as I did, it will not lift your spirits. Poor 3.0

Run Fatboy Run: Odd film directed by David Schwimmer (ross from friends) and starring Simon Pegg. This was okay, not really all that funny though and a bit messy. Pegg plays a man who after leaving his pregnant wife at the alter attempts to turn around his pathetic life and his reputaion as an unreliable estranged father by running a marathon. Those expecting the winning formula of Hot Fuzz and Sean will be disappointed but not an unpleasent way to spend a couple of braindead hours on a Sunday evening. 5.0

Rise of The Footsoldier: Did not know what to expect from this based on a real events story about the rise of a small time hood through the seedy world of nightclubs in the 80's to running a crime syndicate in the 90's. It was fairly standard fayre really but not terrible, worth a look if you can't find anything else in Blockbuster. 5.0

A Room For Romeo Brass: I have seen this a few times but bought it in HMV's offer. One of Shane Meadows best and a great performance form Paddy Considine when you consider it was his first ever acting role. Paddy's character befriends two boys and what at first seems to be an innocent befriending soon descends into something much darker and malevolent. Good performances from most and a quirky little film which will be enjoyed by fans of Shane Meadows other efforts, especially Dead Men's Shoes. Worth a peek for sure. 7.5

So many good flicks out/coming out:

Precious
A Single Man
A Prophet

We were at Cineworld at the Marina last weekend (going to see A Prophet) when we noticed a small sign for the Ian Dury film Sex & Drugs & Rock and Roll being introduced by Ian Dury's daughter so we went for that instead. It was all a bit surreal as it was shown on one of the smaller screens and it was less than half full and many of the audience were friends/family of Jemima Dury, Ian Dury or the Blockheads. Why this special screening was so under-publicised and why it was done there and not the Duke of Yorks is mystery.

You probably picked the better film tbh. I saw A Prophet the other week and while it was well made, it was not really a great film that never really comes to anything. Bit disappointed tbh.

Wasn't the power of it thanks to it coming to nothing, to no definite salvation, to end up walking off with the wife of his dead friend and not know what he would do with her? I thought it held the perfect balance of powerhouse prison drama, that miniaturised version of life outside, the politics, the religion, the desperate quest for belonging, for identity, for power, and the semi-humanisation of our main man by his permanent reminder of guilt from the throat-slitting scene near the start. It had me on edge and i liked that it was incidental and didn't flow perfectly. A really well-made character study, i thought, with no complete closure or the natural beckoning of a part 2.
