After having to listen to John Motson talking tosh for umpteen years, I thought that she was a pleasant change.

Exactly - I remember Motty's World Cup highlight being his 2006 classic: 'I say, Mark - I fancy there might be the suspicion of an own goal there!' after Paraguay defender Carlos Gamarra had headed firmly past his own keeper to give England the lead ...

We currently have one on Fox doing the WC games, Aly something. She is honestly woeful, apparently she has been labeled a really poor commentator in MLS and lower league games in the US but she got the gig anyway. I think as more women move into these roles we can get good ones but for now we just have to deal with awful ones to hit the diversity quota.

What's wrong with her? I think she's pretty good: done all her homework on the players and isn't wasting any time on meaningless waffle. I like Keown too, he's the best of the summarisers IMO.

I quite liked her as well until she started ''Hero Worshipping'' Ronaldo - But apart from that I thought she was good and the other commentators ''Hero Worship'' Ronaldo as well so not that different.

Yeah, fair point. The one who commentated on the Spain/Portugal game was worse though, he was basically ******* himself every time he mentioned Ronaldo.

I was impressed with Vicki Sparks though. I was thinking what made her different and it was her interaction with Keown. As someone said above, he was almost like a co-commentator and it worked well. What you often get with existing commentators is an attempt to treat the summariser as a mate, up for bantz. We didn't have any of that.

Red button and put on the five live commentary

Is there a way you can do this without it going to SD?

I tried doing this on Saturday when Lawrenson was being a bellend during the France Oz game. 5 live commentary was a lot less offensive to my ears but the picture quality was hugely more offensive to my eyes.

I don't think that anyone is (seriously) saying that women are not capable of commentating on football. They clearly are, and are just as qualified to do so as their male counterparts. For me its just an honest preference. I don't like the 'shrillness' of the voice when there's some action on the pitch. Thats not to say I like ALL the male commentators either - Jonathan Pearce absolutely does my swede in. But I just prefer a MAN in the commentary box.

The OP is.

It's nothing to do with having a vagina, it's about having a high-pitched voice.

Huge problem in radio in particularly - generally the most popular and/or longest lasting women on radio, particularly current affairs, have deep voices. You could be A1 in terms of interview skills and political analysis and you'd get nowhere with a higher pitched voice.

Particularly for morning radio actually.

Possibly with a Freesat box and waaaay more faffing with entering codes directly than its worth.

She is awful. Unreal - England has had all the masculinity knocked out of it.....men are now pussy whipped limp-wristed slaves to their bosses and wives......scared to say anything to anyone. Currently being trained to love trannys.

So glad I don't live there.

Female commentator on the world cup? lol....it has to be a joke.

The 1950’s called. They want their outdated views back.

Women really let themselves down when goals are scored and their commentary goes super high pitched with excitement...I’m surprised more dogs don’t bark at the radio or TV :rolleyes:

So commentators with no experience of international football/world cup should not commentate on international football/world cup?

I don't think you have thought this through...

Which is fair enough. I mean, if your voice is so unclear, flat or high pitched etc that it’s going to annoy majority of listeners or viewers then you shouldn’t get the job. Sorry, bit like being obese and applying to be a fitness coach. No ones going to take you seriously and you may even damage the employers brand. Dems da facts. It’s a no from me :)

So a women commentating on a man's game - with a male co-commentator chipping in from time to time when she allows - is progress in your mind?

Well done - you have been well and truly socially engineered.

Get over yourself. If you have erectile dysfunction, try Viagra. FFS.

Reminded me of Euro 2016, Shearer saying "We don't know too much about Slovenia". Surely to god you should be expected to do some basic research on the subject of your 'expert' anlysis/pundetry ? Alex Scott was certainly a breath of fresh air, albeit only doing what should be expected of a pundit.

Patrice Evra tonight had no idea that Iran's next game was their third and last in the group stage. Slouching ignoramous. And he's not even a woman. What's going on?????
