The first one was Jacqui Oatley.

The one today wasn't her. I won't go so far as to say she was great, as I felt she was a bit stilted at times, but then Gary Lineker has made a whole TV career out of that and nobody seems to object.

As said, it is not an issue of gender, but the key thing you need in a commentator is "passion". The first thing a commentator needs is an affinity with the viewer / listener. I've heard many male commentators who also had this lack of passion.

I really don't care who they are, but I want to hear "passion" in the commentary.

Gary Lineker is a former England international and has been hired for multi-million pound contracts to sell various products based on his charm and perceived popularity with the general public as a celebrity - he also is popular with the housewives (allegedly) and inoffensive to the average male football fan in the key demographic (due to not having played for or been associated closely with any of the 'big four').

The female commentator tonight was a bad commentator regardless of sex, her commentary felt far more forced than the others I heard in either programme and, to my knowledge, she doesn't have the credentials of the example you offered - Gary Lineker - to fall back on. Care to back down?

Have to agree with Edna. Female commentators should not be excluded from working in the mens game. Albeit the woman commentating in the match on the FLS was quite poor, im sure there are many women that would make good commentators. Afterall men commentate in female "orientated" sports. Dont tar everyone with the same brush. Just becuase it doesnt "sound right", does not mean it isnt.

Sorry but it seems both you and Edna may have over compensated on this - nobody has said female commentators should be excluded from the men's game. Bloody hell that would be harsh!

She was crap on the mic though - for what it's worth most male commentators are crap too.

Who was the one today then?

Sounded really similar to her.

Thought she sounded ok, quite understated. Considerably easier to listen to than Peter Drury and Clive Tyldsley. Also it wasn't a bad game either, very entertaining.

It was Jacqui Oatley and she was SHITE

I had to mute the TV it was so annoying.

She sounds like one of those kids who gets thier letter read out (showing my age here) on Jim'll Fix it.

If she wasn't very good then so be it......to be fair there are a few male commentators I can't stand.

But I do think some of this verbal directed at her is because she is female whether you want to admit it or not. Its a male dominated occupation, some people just can't cope with a change.

Well, it was my wife who said 'Its like a bloke talking about periods'

For me, she sounds more like a kid than a women which is where it annoys. As someone said above, Alison Mitchell is fine with Cricket.

Yep - I'm not defending her, if she's no good shes no good. But some people will struggle even if she were brilliant simply becuase its been a male dominated job since the year dot!

I'm really not a fan of Jacqui Oatley - she commentates on a game like an excitable child does playing on their Playstation.

However, it's certainly not a sexist thing for me, I think it's just the fact she's not a great commentator - I've no doubt that if someone like Clare Balding or Gabby Logan went into football commentary, they'd be as good as anybody.
