NO votes for A Clockwork Orange? I should have made this a multi-choice poll - I went for the Shining but regret it now.

The beginning of 2001 has to rate as one of the best openings to any film, has to be seen on the big screen. Who would have thought that spaceships and apes with a pig and a bone thrown in for good measure could be that awesome and thought provoking. It was long time ago and I was quite stoned though.
No way - for a film released in 1968, the special effects are still jaw-droppingly brilliant, I love that film.

2001 & Paths Of Glory are both masterpieces. Clockwork Orange is well done but hugely overrated - made worse by a shite ending that differs from the book.

As a matter of interest, who on NSC has actually seen this masterpiece?

I have, several times. I think it is OK, but over-rated. Unfortunately its mythical reputation through being withdrawn rather overshadows the true worth of the content.

Overall it's a mildly diverting satire on violence in modern society, but it all looks a bit dated now.

I do like the opening shot in the Korova Milk Bar though...

I have and was really disappointed. I was too young to see it in the 70s and it then disappeared for about 30 years. I finally saw it a couple of years ago and thought it was a poor effort; it looked dated and the acting really wasn't great.

I did like the book and normally like Kubrick films so it was a double disappointment.

I wouldn't put Clockwork Orange anywhere near his best films, it's probably his worst and i've seen everyone except for Barry Lyndon. It's complete style over substance, with none of the ideas of darkness or humanity that Kunbrick's famous for

Kubrick had it withdrawn because he was worried about copy-cat violence. I saw it the first day it opened in Brighton , and I thought it was great. I recently found it on offer for £2.99 in Fourboys so I bought a copy and was hugely disappointed. It was of it's time.

I own it on DVD - think it's an astonishing film, incredible. Especially in the context of its times, of bootboys, "short, sharp shock" treatment etc etc. How things have changed...happy slapping, chavs etc.
