Can't advise on the nightlife as I'm far far too old but if a curry is in order you could do worse than head to the curry mile in Rusholme!

Depends what parts you visit, often the centre is nicer than the suburbs, sometimes it's not. Got to say I haven't been to a lot of UK cities, but Reading seemed quite pleasant.

Worthing is more peaceful than Brighton, my town, not a city though, still an Albion fan though lol
 








Lichfield is worth having a look at.

Despite the condemnation of George Fox, the bare-footed quaker:-
