Has anyone seen the film called Merry Christmas, about the ceasefire during the Christmas of 1914 on the Western Front?

Yes - it's quality, especially measured against the slushiness of the competition.

It's unfortunate that this apparent growth in the WW1 memorial and tourism industry in recent years hasn't brought a genuinely decently-made film like that to greater prominence. Hopefully they'll show it again this year.

Is that a bit like Miracle on 34th St, but with Kriss Kringle giving us a show-stopping version of Lullaby of Broadway halfway through?

There is the proof that he was mad. I never went with all that sentimental claptrap............. he was a danger to those kids.

My girlfriend would like to nominate 'the Holiday', which is a love actually-style film from 2 years ago starring Jack Black, Jude Law, Kate Winslet and Cameroon Diaz.

What's that war film where they have a firing squad to shoot deserters and they get led out in the snow whilst "Have yourself a merry little Christmas" plays?

Paths of Glory. Kirk Douglas. ?

They weren't deserters - I seem to remember that they'd done nothing wrong, no? Brilliant, unjustly overlooked film that.

God, I saw that once. I hereby UN-nominate it.
