I'd love to help, but you appear to be beyond it! His next one is called Dead Boring and after that Dead Formulaic, but they both feature lovely sepia pics of the Palace Pier on the cover so it's all fine.

(advance apologies, I just like my books half well written with clever plots and characterisation - stick with Grisham)

From that list, Lord of the Rings, closely followed by the Harry Potter books (yes, they really are that good). And come to think of it, forget 'from that list' - Lord of the Rings unsurpassed IMHO.
Honourable mentions too to some lovely stories based around Sussex - Kippling's 'Puck of Pook's Hill', for example, or some of Rosemary Sutcliffe's best - such as 'Knight's Fee' and 'Warrior Scarlet'.

Mine is The Silver Sword by Ian Serraillier.

Read it as a kid when I was laid up with a kidney problem. Mum came back from the library with a stack of books and I only ever read that. Over and over.

I used to love that book, although I haven't read it (or even thought about it) for years.

As for my personal favourite, I'll go for The Green Mile by Stephen King - a fantastic book, and a brilliant film adaptation too.

As a kid I loved The Chronicles of Narnia, and I'm also a big fan of the Song Of Ice And Fire series by George RR Martin.

If we're including non-fiction, then I'll add Vulcan 607 by Rowland White - the story of the Black Buck 1 raid in the Falklands.

The God of Small things by Arundhati Roy. Its the only fiction book Ive read for at least 30 years. I have a mountain of non fiction

A marvellous book mixing history,humour and pathos, should be on the school curriculum.

I loved that must read it again, strangely just came across my old copy of Puckoon but reading it didn't find it as funny as I remember.
