Eagle, then later Charles Buchan's Football Monthly. Can't forget the excitement each week waiting for the Eagle to arrive through the letter-box - sounds sad, I know, but I wonder whether this computer games generation can still relate to that sort of thrill of getting a comic each week tailored to the dreams and aspirations of a young lad, Dan Dare shooting into space to deal with the threats of the dreaded Mekon and other enemies, Sergeant Luck with the Foreign Legion, etc. Sounds dated now but there was something reassuringly comforting about meeting up again with your favourite characters each week, especially when they were so far removed from your own way of life.

Shoot, or was it an amalgamation between Shoot and Goal? called Shoot/Goal. Either way, that was it for me. Oh, and I remember the first issue of 2000AD, must have had that on subscription for years too.

For a while in the seventies, Shoot incorporated Goal, which had been a separate magazine. Shoot was a seriously good magazine. Does anyone remember the league ladders that the magazine used to issue every pre-season?

Look-in was a regular of mine. I remember my mum confiscating one issue because she wanted the double-page spread of David Cassidy and my sister ripping out the double-page spread of Brian Connolly, the lead-singer of The Sweet.

Oh yes, if I remember rightly, you pushed out the slots and had little cards with the teams names on to move up and down as the results came in. Like a cardboard Exel Spreadsheet! Lasted about 2 weeks of the season before you got so cheesed off and just read the old mans Sunday Mirror for the league tables.

Found some old roy of the rovers mags at my dads the other day.

Might be worth a pound or two you know, especially if they are in tip top condition. Superwife runs a small Auction company in Warnham, drop them in and they'll give you an appraisal/valuation if you like.

By the middle of September, they were dog-eared and tatty. The tabs used to indicate the club's home ground and nickname before they became so emaciated that you couldn't read what was written on them.

To start with, Beano, Shoot and Roy of the Rovers. Then Match started, stuck with that for a while. Also those small A5-size and particularly un-PC war comics (Commando etc), probably explains a lot - "Die, you Tommy schwein" - that sort of thing.

That sounds about right...don't forget moving the Albion to the top of the league so you could have a look at what it might look like, before moving them back near the bottom again.

War Picture Library and Battle Picture Library. The Silver Luger is the only title that I can remember.
