Prompted by Sean Gregan's appearance at centre half for Oldham yesterday, who I believe was the widest footballer seen at Withdean since the days of Warren Aspinall.

Decent enough defender, I thought, good passer and excellent header of the ball, spoiled only by a total lack of pace and the turning circle of a supertanker.

It's a rare sight in this day and age to clock a professional player whose gut hangs over his shorts, but Gregan managed it. Gok Wan would have them playing in black, you know, it's far more flattering than luminious yellow.

Me and Beachy were having exactly the same conversation on Saturday.

I'm sure there are many from the distance past I've forgotten, Micky Quinn for example. Can't quite remember just how fat he was.

After being out done with Southall, I went for Razor Rudduck at Swindon a few years ago. He stamped on Zamora and the ref missed it.
