instigate a separate lane for drink drivers, with protective padding around it

Where? The A27 is fairly long.

BBC says A27; Beddingham
both ways between A26, Beddingham and A2270, Polegate By-Pass, Polegate Closed both ways between the Beddingham Roundabout junction and the A2270 Polegate By-Pass junction in Beddingham, because of a serious accident. Diversion in operation.

Sadly whilst there are roads and people are licensed to drive cars - there will be accidents - you'll never stop an accident - only be able to ensure cars are safe enough to withstand them to the speed limit.

Middle Farm is a fucker of a stretch of road. Under trees, hills, changes to speed limits, and blind corners on a fast road. What more can you ask for to create an accident black spot?

Each year 1.2 million men, women and children around the world lose their lives as a result of road traffic accidents.

i would stick a 40mph speed limit between selmeston and beddingham and ban overtaking on this stretch then prehaps these accidents would not be so severe

as 10cc say, not in hove
it's an awful stretch of road but sadly the only easy way to make it safer is to make it a dual carriageway like the A23, meaning that the lovely surrounding countryside will be ruined.

banning lorries and caravans would help, but is hardly practical

Make it a proper dual-carriageway (at least) throughout it's length in Sussex with junctions not roundabouts. It's the major East/West trunk road south of London and it's an absolute disgrace that vast stretches of it still look a country lane or a residential road.

According to the police who have just allowed me through the closed section of the A27 in order to get home, the accident is just by the entrance to Charleston. Which is pretty much exactly where ALL the recent fatalities have occurred.

'Lovely surrounding countryside'? Good grief afters you sound like a member of CPRE (sorry, I know that's a vile insult). I must have missed all that - all I see are monoculture fields part of Britains chemical agro-industry.
