It's a t-shirt based on the graphic representation of the pulse of a star. So what? Joy Division didn't discover, invent, or have an exclusive license for such a thing, they merely lifted the image from a textbox and used it as an album cover. Who's to say Disney even based this t-shirt on the Unknown Pleasures album cover anyway?

Well they never did ticket stubs at the art college basement, don't think they even stamped your hand. It was just pay on the door usually. If memory serves, I never even knew the gig was on in advance, was just walking past and noticed the queue then noticed the sign saying New Order were playing and only registered who New Order were because I'd been reading about them being formed by the surviving members of Joy Division in NME the week before. I'd seen Joy Division a few times previously, but it was just by sheer chance I happened across New Order that night. Doubt the gig was even publicised other than by word of mouth.

Thanks for that - Joy Division / New Order are my pet subject. I have a friend in the States who maintains a gigography and I've passed on your recollections to him - hope you don't mind. As I said, this particular gig has alway been a bit of a mystery so he was happy to have some further information.

That's all very true, but had you seen that image anywhere else before Peter Saville showed it to you? Anyone you show that picture to is going to associate it with Joy Division first and foremost, its iconic.

Presumably, then, Disney got the permission of the rights holder so as not to infringe copyright. Bloomin better have done, knowing how paranoid they are!
Assuming so, maybe those outraged should aim their disgust a bit closer to Manchester than Los Angeles!

Joy Division did do the Basement, Brighton Art College. I know many people who went, but I was too young.
New Order did the Brighton Centre.

Yes New Order did play The Centre in 1986 (and Jenkinsons Bar in 1981), but at the risk of repeating myself, Joy Division never played in Brighton. The article kindly linked to by Tom Hark mentions that they were booked to play there but Curtis' suicide meant it never happened. I expect that is why New Order played instead - they fulfilled some of JD's aborted American tour dates in a similar manner.

Another tour c.1983 bypassed Brighton, so we went to see New Order at Portsmouth Guildhall.

I was at that gig - most memorable bit was being caught right in the middle of a massive fight in the stalls. I gallantly tried to protect my girlfriend and got a stray DM in the nuts for my trouble!

I was at the Jenkinsons gig. New Order played for 35 minutes, and apart from the glorious Ceremony, were very dull, probably cos no-one had really had a chance to listen to any of their other material at that stage.
Support band Section 25 were even worse and played with their backs turned to the audience for the duaration of their set, the pretentious, dismal tits.
Mind you, my advance ticket was £1.90, but it was a massive £2.50 if you paid on the door!
