Apparently when he was on the Manhattan Project he went round picking all the locks on the safes containing the Top Secret stuff (of which I’d imagine there was a LOT) to prove that the security was inadequate. Bet that made him popular!

C B Fry, sportsman, politician, diplomat, academic, teacher, writer, editor and publisher.

Sports wise Fry represented England at both cricket and football, played in an FA Cup Final for Southampton and equalled the world long jump record. He also played rugby for Oxford, Blackheath and the Barbarians and could have played for England. At Oxford, he won 12 blues and captained the university at cricket, soccer and athletics in the same year.

He was offered the vacant throne of Albania.

Born in Croydon, he stood for election in Brighton. Two Brighton & Hove buses (429 and 829) were named "C B Fry" in his honour.

Beat me to it! What a character he was. He was the last amateur to play (at right back) for England and only missed his Rugby blue by being injured. When he set that long jump record, he was relaxing in the groundsman's hut with a brandy and cigar, went out and set the record, and only jumped the one time unlike his opponents! He also ran a training ship for the Royal Navy. Apparently after the Italians had invaded Albania, he said that perhaps he should have accepted the throne after all, because he had thought about inviting County Cricket teams out there for pre-season warm-up matches, and with County cricket being played, the Royal Navy would have had no choice but to intervene! He might have changed the course of history. His 13 double-centuries for Sussex will never be beaten.
