That's probably what they'd do after filling in three corners (remember, we have to have one clear for access).

There is a method whereby all four corners can be filled, which still guaruntees access. Don't ask me how, but I am assured it can be done with a bit of clever architectural jiggery-pokery.

When on my tour I was clearly told that the capacity could be raised to a total of around 30,000. It cannot be expanded beyond that due to the way the stadium has been constructed.

Really hope the stadium never gets too much bigger. Whilst we may be able to fill it at glamour fixtures, it seems unlikely that we'll ever be able to regularly attract crowds of much over 20k (and even that is pretty optimistic. The thought of watching all our home games in a one-third full modern stadium (no mater how brilliant Falmer looks) is depressing.

I agree. As succesful as the club can become in the next decade (which I really believe it will) I think 30,000 tops is about right.

Thats my understanding. Any thoughts of raising roofs, forget about it. Its a self-supprting structure, the arches which hold up the roof are buried deep into the concrete thrust blocks. You'd have to dismantle practically the entire stadium structure to build any higher. Never gonna happen.

In these calculations it must be remembered that when we were in the 1st Division last time, the only time, not once including the first game at home to Arsenal did we have a crowd of over 30,000 and that was when attendances at football were higher than now, with less distractions and TV, so would we need in excess of 30,000 in the forseeable future.

The architect told me it was 35,000 when I met him at the official start of the work on the stadium, I was lucky enough to win an invite with all the "celeb" fans Des Lynam, Fat Bot Slim etc....

Looking at the attendances from the Championship this season the League Average is a touch under 17,500, with the Average capacity just under 25,500. Even for the Premier League the average attendance is just over 35,000 (average capacity 38,000).

I doubt we'll need to expand hugely, but about 30,000 would probably see us right.

I think it's time for a bit of reality to kick in.
After years of fighting to get a new stadium it was obvious that their would be a huge interest in season tickets for the first
season at the Amex irrelevant of which division we were in.Before withdean has even been dismantled fans are calling for the capacity at falmer to be increased.Let's see how many fans that have purchased season tickets for next season that probably never went to withdean choose to renew their st before we start thinking about increasing the capacity.

I agree, given that our all time record attendance is under 37,000.

The Goldstone held 38,000 And if the East Terrace was straight all (& the West ran its full length) the way down there would be no doubt our record attendance would not be 36,747,but more like 45,000

I would go one further than that and see how many season ticket holders turn up, game after game! We will do well to reach capacity ten times next season!

Southampton & Eastleigh (no more a football hotbed than Brighton) conurbation has a population of 304,000. Yet they sometimes fill 32,000.

Brighton to Littlehampton 461,000, add many Brighton fans in the large towns of Hastings, Bexhill, Eastbourne, Haywards, Burgess, Horsham & Lewes.
You can see how this large catchment, that used to feed and pack the Goldstone, could under the right owner and manager could give gates of 30,000+.

Also depends on ticket pricing. Cheap tickets for schools in Sussex, will help some kids choose Albion as well as or instead of Manure, CFC, LFC & Arsenal.

Add a proper youth academy, and the affinity with locals would increase with a Sussex lad or two making it in the first team squad,

Lets move. Waterhall anyone!?

You can joke now but this could be true -who knows we may find ourselves 10 - 15 years from now as the Biggest club outside London in the South by far-then again we might not.

I agree, given that our all time record attendance is under 37,000.

The recortd shows 36747 at home to Fulham on Boxing Day 1958 but it was said at the time that there were over 40,000 in the ground as many jumped over he turnstiles ata cheap rate. I know I did, the gateman lets us and obviously binned the cash.

Also the game against Watford to get promotion from 3rd Div South to Div II was completely full and the cinder tarck around the edge of the pitch was full with children so I suspect the figure for that game was greater. The reverse side of the coin is that in the top flight we never achieved a gate of 30,000 so I would expect 30,000 to be sufficient for us.

This was when Arsenal had 17k at home for some games so not exactly true.

Not so long ago that Leeds had 14,000 and Chelsea and Newcastle about the same

Amex Capacity / filling of that

The big thing is that, for now, the club has apparently sold all available season tickets (although it has been suggested that a few hundred or so may become available)

The answer to the question of further expansion would seem to depend upon, to my mind, the continuing success of the football team into the coming season AND continuing support. There is certainly a huge catchment area for Seagulls Fans and potential fans so if we do well in the Championship and bums continue to occupy seats, and there is a good chance of season ticket renewals 12 months hence, there is every likeliehood that the club will consider increasing capacity by filling in the corners and developing the East Stand Upper. (subject of course to planning consent).

It seems to me that thereafter no further expansion will be possible to the East and West due to the arches but perhaps there is the possibility of doing something with North and South, which though not ideal, would possibly be the only option.

But, even if we are looking at maximum population of the existing, plus corners and East Upper, we would be doing amazingly well, but I am not sure that we are likely to achieve that level, week on week, in the near future.

More importantly than this pie in the sky, is the reality of getting 22500supporters, one way or the other, into and out of the Amex in a reasonable time period.
