Frustratingly Fallout 4 has always been buggy. Which is a real shame, because it is an amazing game. I've always found the area surrounding Goodneighbour, to be particularly problematic. It's worth persevering with though and just making sure you save regularly.Started Fallout 4 couple of weeks ago, but had to stop as it was a buggy mess. I had two missions that just didn't 'complete', leaving the character I was supposed to talk to to continue the missions just standing in the same spot not doing anything. Thought I'd give it another go when the update for the X:S comes out.
For now, I'm playing Fallout: New Vegas, which seems to be running OK so far.
In terms of the TV series, the more I chat to friends the more I think if you're not a fan of the games you won't appreciate the series as much. Personally I think the series is excellent. It has everything from the games. To the point where I think its not a case of the tv show doing the games justice, it has expanded on the canon. But if you're coming to the series fresh, I can appreciate there's a lot of subtle things you probably won't see.
