Take incredibly misjudged punts on journeyman players who have very briefly shone .......................Why take a dodgy punt?

A 'punt' which costs nothing - or next to nothing - isn't really a punt at all.

If the player turns out to be quite happy having made more than enough money to keep him in comfort for the rest of his life, fine, tell him to sling his hook. If, on the other hand, he has realised how his actions (regardless whether they were legal or moral or not) have ruined his reputation as a footballer, and he wants to achieve some of the things he was expected to achieve as a teenager he might be worth having. Let the manager have a look and decide.
Giving him a trial costs next to nothing and involves no commitment.

Why is it win win?

Surely, the time and effort they’ll put into discovering that Rodwell is shitehouse and deeply flawed could have been spent better developing their youngsters?

Let’s look at Bloom’s approach verses your scattergun-come-eBay method.

BHA:

Invest in young players taking talent like £20m rated Ben White from under the noses of Southampton and stick him in a top Championship club on loan where he is currently the best player.

Invest in a world class academy and training centre to attract top talent like Maupay who turned down Sheff Utd & Villa.

Invest in cheap foreign stars of the future such as Tau or McAllister.

Or

Take incredibly misjudged punts on journeyman players who have very briefly shone such as Rodwell, Michu or Matt Derbyshire.

We don’t need to shop in charity shops anymore, not with Tony.

And also, why do we need another central midfielder? We’ve already got Baluta who can’t make a squad along with some really promising youngsters all queuing up behind Pröpper, Stephens, Mooy, Alzate, Bissouma & Groß. Why take a dodgy punt?

Surely there is room for both approaches if done on a case by case basis as long as they all pass the no dickheads test.

I think we've learnt our lesson in the past, signing perennial and expensive losers who aren't interested in football, just the money it brings. Leon Best, Darren Bent, Kemy Agustin just a few names who come to mind.

I think that he is still on trial with no decision made as yet but you cannot knock them they are looking to improve as cheap as possible.

Would have been a very long trial. Morrison signed a 1 year deal with Sheffield United back in July, proving to be real value for money with 12 mins of Premier League football this season, hasn't even made their match day squad since the end of September. I would imagine that Morrison still demands a decent wage and seems to deliver very little for it.

It's worth noting that Sheffield United named a 25 man squad so they'd need to sell someone, or not name one player in the second half of the season to make a space for Rodwell should they sign him, they may even be looking at Morrison as the player to de-list.
