Have you read about the situation or is this one of your attempts at trolling?

Should a Brighton player do what he did, I damn well expect fans to be calling him out rather people going "he's contractually obliged".

Maybe clubs should stop handing out stupid contracts? I can't really see how this is Rodwell fault

He was perfectly within his rights to see out his contract at Sunderland.

As I understand it he was asked to cancel the Sunderland contract to get his huge wage off their wage bill so they could sign a few more players to get them competitive again. The benefit to him was that he would be able to rebuild his career elsewhere and get playing again.

Seemed like a win win situation to me and I would hope that in the same situation I would have cancelled it. But we don't know how corrupting chasing cash can be to a person so I can't say for sure.

Still I can understand why the Sunderland fans thought badly of him and I would be surprised if he garnered much respect for his decision. Within his rights though it may be.

I suppose that he comes into a similar category as Ravel Morrison who signed for Sheff Utd earlier in the season. Good player who promised a lot but failed to live up to expectation. We know all about those type players.

Was their contract stupid in the context of being a premier league club at the time it was offered? :ffsparr: Well reasoned argument. Flawless, brilliant...
Please explain how we are wrong.

I would like to be educated on this, I have very little knowledge and would rather not keep making the same mistake.

A contract without relegation clauses in for a club like us, Sunderland , Blackburn at the time would be stupid, yes, if it involved a long period of time and big wages.

Rodwell came out of the sunderland till I die programme looking like a money grabber because he wanted to see out his contract. It happens. Then if irony is that the them chief exec Martin Bain was scathing and said he was taking money from fans (words to that effect). Bain left soon after overseeing two delegations and took more then a million I believe. I wonder what Rodwell thought of that.

It might have been stupid while "being a Premier League Club" if it didn't say something like: "and if we are relegated, you can sling your hook or your pay will be cut to £Xmillion per year."

For the third time of asking, please enlighten me.

I have not read the situation.
I was not trolling.
I'd like to have my mistake explained to me.

A cautionary tale, signing a sicknote for £10m and giving him a monster 5 year contract. Ideally you'd want a relegation clause built into the deal for a wagecut if the club goes down, but the reality is that the player / his agent would probably just turn down the deal and look elsewhere. Sunderland are a perennial yo-yo club so Rodwell would've known there'd be a fair chance of them taking the drop at some point during his 5 year contract, but if the club were desperate enough for his signature then I guess thats why they waived any relegation clauses and just filled his trousers.

The other way of insulating yourself from a crippling PL wagebill if you're relegated is by setting a cut-price transfer fee release clause. This is what WBA did with Jonnny Evans. When they went down, he had a £3.5m release clause, which was duly activated when Leicester signed him. £3.5m for Evans was an absolute STEAL for a player of his age (30 when he moved), class and experience, Leicester picked up a real bargain there. We did similarly well with the Andone deal at the time (or so we thought). At least he didn't turn out to be an overly expensive mistake though.

Wherever Rodwell ends up now, I doubt he'll get anywhere near that £70k a week he fleeced out of Sunderland.

I notice that Sheff Utd have done exactly what I wanted us to do, taken him on trial to have a look. He is 28 so in the last chance saloon if he could recapture his form as a 19 year old he would be a great signing if not you say no thanks and all it has cost is accommodation for the trial period. Win Win situation.

How is Ravel Morrison getting on with Sheff Utd ?

I think that he is still on trial with no decision made as yet but you cannot knock them they are looking to improve as cheap as possible.

I think he’s signed for them as he’s been on the bench hasn’t he ?

I notice that Sheff Utd have done exactly what I wanted us to do, taken him on trial to have a look. . . . .Win Win situation.

Why is it win win?

Surely, the time and effort they’ll put into discovering that Rodwell is shitehouse and deeply flawed could have been spent better developing their youngsters?

Let’s look at Bloom’s approach verses your scattergun-come-eBay method.

BHA:

Invest in young players taking talent like £20m rated Ben White from under the noses of Southampton and stick him in a top Championship club on loan where he is currently the best player.

Invest in a world class academy and training centre to attract top talent like Maupay who turned down Sheff Utd & Villa.

Invest in cheap foreign stars of the future such as Tau or McAllister.

Or

Take incredibly misjudged punts on journeyman players who have very briefly shone such as Rodwell, Michu or Matt Derbyshire.

We don’t need to shop in charity shops anymore, not with Tony.

And also, why do we need another central midfielder? We’ve already got Baluta who can’t make a squad along with some really promising youngsters all queuing up behind Pröpper, Stephens, Mooy, Alzate, Bissouma & Groß. Why take a dodgy punt?
