Static cameras are of course detectable. My car always alerts me to them. The problem is the mobile police camera van that gets randomly parked to catch unsuspecting drivers, or worse, the pedestrian policeman with a hand held speed camera. Not sure the latter are legal anymore, but I was done by the former a few weeks ago. Luckily I have been on zero ppints for 4+ years so it will be another chance to enjoy an advanced driver course.

Waze is your friend, apart from regularly updated speed camera info, including police patrols, it also warns you about broken down cars ahead, road kill on the road coming up, even potholes.

It also works out the quickest route taking into account traffic conditions and shows you how bad traffic jams coming up are.

I have binned my Garmin and Tom Tom and never use my cars inbuilt Sat Nav

It depends on how you feel about them. A lot of laws are made by the people in power to control or suppress people with no power. Thats why they should just be seen as recommendations. Follow the ones you find sensible, ignore the others.

It came with the car and is part of the screen. It is smething that requires a subscription. Oddly it has been telling me my subscription is about to expire since I bought it. Four years ago....still working.

Speed limits... if the driver is good, I couldnt care if they go over the limit. Laws should be seen as nothing more than recommendations.

Ha! I managed five times in two weeks on the same camera!

I would like to mention that it involved unduly low speed limits on Victorian freeways (motorways) which are 100kph. Roads were clear and traffic good. Automated cameras here that are not painted yellow or made easy to spot and I had only recently arrived. Each offence was less than 8kph over the limit. Four years ago now nearly.

That used to be my theory until I had to do a speed aware course for doing 34 in a 30, I have two different vehicles and on both according to satellite speed indicators both speedometers aren’t accurate. I now drop to 25 through the camera just to make sure.

Is the sat nav saying your speedo reads lower than actual, or higher than actual? If it's the latter, it shouldn't be a problem. All new cars have their speedo's tuned to read slightly more than the actual road speed as the regulations stipulate what is and isn't acceptable. I typically find that my sat nav will read around 5% less than what the speedo says, and the sat nav has always been validated by the occasional road-side speed checker I go past that flashes up your speed for you. So as long as your sat nav reads less than the speedo, you should be fine going through a camera in a 30 zone with a speedo reading of 30 - because you'll actually be doing 28 or 29 at most.

If the speedo is reading less than the sat nav, you need to go and get the speedo calibrated. It's technically illegal for the speedo to read less than the actual road speed.

Did you know that Waze is owned by Google? And that the Waze data also feeds into the navigation side of Google Maps? I was a big fan of Waze until lockdown meant I wasn't doing my long commute around the south-western half of the M25 anymore. I've now got a car with Android Auto and using Google Maps navigation with that is easier (although apparently it should work with Waze...) so I'll probably be switching over when my commute resumes later this year.

Meh. Too bad. If we had more noisy cars, less drunks would place themselves in the middle of the road. Yet cars are more quiet today. Whataboutism yes, but relevant - sometimes people die, thats just how it is.

We dont determine that and there will continue to be speed limits. But morally I dont think its a big problem. Cab drivers often go over speed limits, I dont moan about it, I give them money instead.

Try telling that to the families who have lost people on that stretch of road.

Not really. Its a question of attitude. Ideology, the reason we have laws that we pretend we need to follow and so on, is just godless religion. The laws in a law book means no more than the ten commandments of the bible. Personally I'm not a believer, I dont believe "laws", "human rights", "democracy" and the other made-up shit. Laws just like those old commandments might be real to those who have faith in the cornerstones of modern society. Others, like me, dont think that those things apply to us. I dont need lawmakers and parliaments to guide me through some righteous path, I just go with innate sense. The reason I dont kill people isnt because it says so on page 1351 of some law book but because to me it seems like a mean, dumb and unnecessary thing to do.

British roads are built and maintained with road tax input ....as such they are subject to rules which make then supposedly safe for all to use , that is why speed limits are in place ......whilst your choice to speed is accepted the penalty for such is fixed on a gradual scale as to how fast you are going and how far in excess of the speed limit in place in the locality at which you are pinged.......long story short , if you exceed the speed limit you are going to get caught eventually and if you are exceeding the speed limit and end up hurting or killing someone you are probably going to jail.

The actions in themselves are as cruel and primitive as anything in nature.

Laws are not there for safety and protection, they are there to protect those in power from those that have none. Sure, a consequence of some of them might be that you are or at least feel "safe and protected", but for the most part it is indeed like you say "a deterrence to people doing whatever the f*ck they like", because thats the greatest fear among those who rule our societies.
