He had some lessons and did speak it a bit to make our young Spanish speakers feel welcome, but the language was not spoken at home. He has one Spanish grandparent.

It's all about your use of 'monolingual', which I've never heard before. It's just that it sounds a little contrived, although it's probably a word because we've all heard of 'bilingual'.
